New Paltz Field Hockey Rings in 2010 with a 2-1 Victory over Manhattanville

Box Score

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team dug itself out of a 1-0 deficit early in the first half and held on to defeat Manhattanville College, 2-1, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field.

The Hawks (1-0) surrendered a goal in the first minute of the tilt, but the wealth of senior leadership on the team prevailed, as senior midfielder Lauren Nicomini (Newton, N.J.) evened the score in the fourth minute off of a penalty corner.

Senior forward Sarah Schloss (Brant Lake, N.Y.) rattled the back of the cage just three minutes later, which wound up being enough to ensure a Hawk victory.

The Valiants (0-1) were unable to muster a shot in the second half, while New Paltz unloaded 12 in the final 35 minutes alone. On the game, New Paltz outshot Manhattanville, 19-7.

Senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Dini (Sayville, N.Y.) drew the start in the cage, making two saves and yielding one goal in 35 minutes of action. Freshman goalkeeper Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y.) took over in the second half, closing out the contest without facing a shot.

Melissa Grant made nine stops in between the posts for Manhattanville and allowed both of New Paltz's goals.

New Paltz hosts Western Connecticut State University on Saturday, which will serve as the Hawks' home opener. Game time is set for 1 p.m. on the Turf Field.
