Nicomini’s Goal Breaks up No. 10 Skidmore’s Shutout Bid

Box Score

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – A score from senior midfielder Lauren Nicomini (Newton, N.J.) in the 46th minute gave the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (2-2) a boost, but No. 10 Skidmore College (2-1) lived up to its ranking, defeating the Hawks, 5-1, at Thoroughbred Field on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.

Kelly Blackhurst set the tone early for the Thoroughbreds, rattling the back of the cage in the second minute. Christine Kemp then scored the next three goals, giving Skidmore a 4-0 advantage through 40 minutes of play.

Nicomini's goal, her second of the season, would bring the Hawks within three, but the Thoroughbreds clamped down the rest of the way, preventing the visitors from coming any closer. Blackhurst added an insurance goal in the 55th minute to spell out the final score.

Freshman goalkeeper Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y.) fared well in between the posts for New Paltz, stopping a game-high 12 shots. Liz Catinella made one save and allowed a goal in 55 minutes of action for Skidmore, while Margaux Hoagland did not see a single shot on target in relief duty.

Skidmore outshot New Paltz, 25-4, and also held an 8-2 cushion in penalty corners.

The Hawks start their State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) schedule on Friday, Sept. 17, taking on The College at Brockport in Brockport, N.Y. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
