NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – It has been since 2006 that the State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team (12-4, 2-0 SUNYAC) has lost a home match. The Hawks extended their home winning streak to 28 on Friday evening in the Hawk Center hosting State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) East Division Pool Play, downing SUNY Plattsburgh, 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-15) before handling SUNY Oneonta, 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-19).
The Hawks had little trouble dispatching Plattsburgh, hitting at an extremely efficient .300 clip. The Cardinals made it interesting in the first set, but the hosts ultimately pulled away, claiming the second and third games without much worry.
Junior outside hitter
Melinda DiGiovanna (West Hempstead, N.Y.) led New Paltz with nine kills, a match high, while freshman libero
Carrie Hack (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) collected 18 digs. Freshman setter
Marissa King (Canandaigua, N.Y.) also helped pace the attack, handing out 21 assists.
Oneonta struggled on the attacking front, while the Hawks continued to make the most of their swings in the second match of the afternoon for both teams. The Red Dragons' anemic -.048 hitting percentage doomed them in the end, but New Paltz made life difficult for Oneonta's defense, racking up a respectable .252 hitting percentage. DiGiovanna's eight kills were tops among Hawk players, while Hack reinforced the defense with 16 digs. Freshman setter
Brigid Moore (Victor, N.Y.) had an impressive match off the serve, tallying three service aces.
New Paltz faces SUNY Cortland tomorrow at 10 a.m. before squaring off with SUNY Potsdam at 2 p.m. Both matches will occur in the Hawk Center.
