New Paltz Field Hockey Moves to 2-0, Drops Western Connecticut

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team made history on Saturday afternoon after defeating Western Connecticut State University, 2-0, at the Turf Field: it marked the Hawks' first-ever 2-0 start in program's 11-year history.

The blue and orange won its season opener on the road on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Manhattanville College by a 2-1 final.

New Paltz (2-0) chalked up its first goal of the afternoon in the 24th minute when junior forward Maryana Organidis (Belford, N.J.) found the back of the cage after collecting a rebound off of her previous shot.

Sophomore defender Kim Lepore (Stanfordville, N.Y.) capitalized on a penalty stroke just three minutes later, which put the Hawks on top, 2-0.

In the 62nd minute, the Colonials (0-1) had two scoring opportunities but were unable to finish. Freshman goalkeeper Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y.) turned away a shot by Rachel Duffy, and the New Paltz defense stood in the way of a Stephanie Szafran attempt moments later. After a penalty corner and another Duffy shot, New Paltz regained possession and quelled the threat.

On the afternoon, the blue and orange held the upper hand in shots (16-12), while the Colonials took eight penalty corners to New Paltz's seven.

Pjetri earned the shutout in the cage for the Hawks, collecting four saves. Heather Stone sustained the loss in goal for Western Connecticut, making five stops.

New Paltz next travels to Endicott College on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. matchup.
