BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's basketball team (8-5, 4-3 SUNYAC) saw its four-game winning streak snapped, as The College at Brockport (5-7, 3-2 SUNYAC) handed the Hawks an 83-63 defeat in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action at Vlogianitis Gym on Saturday afternoon.
Brockport overwhelmed New Paltz early, but the Hawks assembled an impressive 21-0 run in the second half to stay in the game. Kyheem Green converted on a layup with 18:38 to play in the second half to give the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the afternoon at 51-19. The Hawks started chipping away, as junior guard
Jermain Wallace (Spring Valley, N.Y.) and sophomore guard/forward
Matt Devine (Manalapan, N.J.) combined for six points to cut the advantage to 26.
Junior forward/center
Daniel Olsen (Stafford Springs, Conn.) made a layup, and junior guard
Harris Wichard (Merrick, N.Y.) knocked down a pair of free throws, as Brockport's edge dwindled down to 22. Junior guard
Shereef Taylor (Hyde Park, N.Y.) scored five straight points before Wichard completed an old-fashioned three-point play. Finally, the run ended after Devine connected on a jumper, got fouled and hit his continuation free throw. After 21 unanswered points, the Brockport lead was cut to 11.
New Paltz, however, was unable to sustain that momentum, as the Hawks never shaved the Golden Eagle lead down to single digits in the second stanza.
