Women’s Volleyball Claims Pair of Victories at Stevens Invitational

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team (17-8) won twice on Saturday at the Stevens Invitational, topping Averett University, 3-2 (25-23, 25-18, 17-25, 25-27, 15-4), before downing the host Stevens Institute of Technology, 3-1 (19-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-18).

Against Averett, the Hawks were led offensively by senior outside hitter Melinda DiGiovanna (West Hempstead, N.Y./West Hempstead), who posted a team-high 14 kills. Sophomore setter Marissa King (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) facilitated the attack with 29 assists, while sophomore libero Carrie Hack (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) paced the defense with 27 digs.

After beating Stevens in straight sets at the Tom Hay Invitational at Springfield College last weekend, New Paltz prevailed for the second time in as many weeks. DiGiovanna and junior outside hitter Michelle Jacobson (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) keyed the attack with 12 kills each, while King once again handed out 29 assists. Senior setter Kelsey Garmendia (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush) was stellar off the serve with five service aces, while Hack had the team-high in digs with 12. DiGiovanna reinforced the front row defensively as well with six total blocks (three solo, three assist).

For the Ducks, Maggie Kowalska floored a match-high 17 kills, while Samantha Gates contributed a match-high 44 assists. Hannah Gasper boasted a match-high 13 digs, while Kate Janes offered two block assists.

The Hawks return to action on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21-22, at the second round of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) East Divisional Pool Play, which is being hosted by SUNY Plattsburgh.
