NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (5-6) defeated non-conference William Paterson University (2-10) in overtime Thursday afternoon by a count of 2-1 on the strength of two goals by senior forward
Stacey Miller (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) at the Turf Field.
Miller, who scored her seventh and eighth markers on the year, opened the scoring attack late in the second half with a goal at 59:58, returning a blocked shot attempt and sending it to the right past goalkeeper Kellye Statz.
William Paterson retaliated quickly with a score of its own at 61:54, when midfielder Jaclyn Bertos recovered the ball after a Pioneer shot attempt escaped a cluster in front of the box. Bertos collected the ball and shot past Hawk sophomore goalkeeper
Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) to even the score at 1-all.
In overtime, New Paltz did not allow the game to hang in the balance for long. Miller deposited her second goal of the game, a shot assisted by sophomore defender
Alyssa Stock (Morris Plains, N.J./Whippany Park), at 72:07 to earn the win for the Hawks. It was Miller's fourth game-winning goal of the season, the sixth of her career.
The Hawks outshot the Pioneers, 21-6, and won the penalty corner battle, 12-5. Pjetri earned the victory for the Hawks, collecting one save, while Statz took the loss, saving six shots.
New Paltz continues play Saturday, Oct. 8, facing non-conference Union (N.Y.) College at 1 p.m. at the Turf Field.
