New Paltz Rolls Past Brockport, 51-42; Remains Undefeated at Home in SUNYAC Play

Box Score Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Despite being outshot on the evening from both the floor and the free-throw line, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team (13-9, 11-4 SUNYAC) found a way to win, topping The College at Brockport (6-15, 4-10 SUNYAC), 51-42, in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game Friday night in the Hawk Center.

Both teams had trouble scoring in spite of a fast-paced game. Brockport shot 32.6 percent (15-of-46) from the floor on the night, while New Paltz went 19-of-68 (27.9 percent) from the field. The Golden Eagles shot 11-of-23 (47.8 percent) from the charity stripe, while the Hawks also struggled from the line, shooting free throws at a 35.7 percent clip (10-of-28). On the glass, New Paltz held a 54-44 cushion in rebounds over Brockport.

New Paltz shot just 22.5 percent (9-of-40) in the first half, while Brockport hit 54.2 percent (13-of-24) of its shots. In spite of that differential, the Hawks trailed by just six at the break at 29-23.

The Hawks erupted for nine unanswered points to start the second half. A three-pointer by junior guard Zoe Cohen (Brooklyn, N.Y.) with 13:40 remaining in regulation gave New Paltz a 32-29 lead, which was the team's first outright advantage since holding an 18-17 edge with 6:50 to go in the first half. The Golden Eagles would never recover from that spurt, and they wound up shooting a woeful 2-of-22 (9.1 percent) from the floor on the half.

Sophomore forward Alex McCullough (Delmar, N.Y.) led New Paltz with a game-high 11 points, while junior point guard Kaitlin Clifford (Staten Island, N.Y.) joined her in double figures with 10. Junior forward Shanay Bradley (Bronx, N.Y.) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, while Clifford, junior guard Caitlin Irwin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and sophomore guard Maliqua Fisher (North Babylon, N.Y.) tied for the game-high in assists with three each. McCullough racked up a career-high in blocks with six on the night, and Fisher kept the Brockport guards on their toes, as she nabbed four steals.

No Golden Eagle reached double-digit scoring figures. Alex Leung and Desiree Fauvelle tied for the team-high in points with nine, while Sarah Alwardt had a well-rounded line that included seven points, 10 rebounds, three assists, three blocks and a steal.

New Paltz returns to the Hawk Center hardwood tomorrow afternoon, as it hosts SUNY Geneseo in its regular-season home finale. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
