Bradley’s Career-High 24 Boards Key Hawks’ 70-61 Win over Fredonia

Box Score Box Score

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Junior forward Shanay Bradley (Bronx, N.Y.) set a career-high in rebounds with 24, as the State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team (12-7, 10-2 SUNYAC) defeated SUNY Fredonia (5-14, 3-10 SUNYAC), 70-61, in SUNYAC action Friday evening at Steele Hall. The victory marked New Paltz's fifth straight.

Bradley's 24 boards—19 of which she pulled down in the second half—went along with her career-high 16 points off 5-of-11 shooting from the floor and 6-of-11 shooting from the free-throw line. Of her 24 rebounds, 16 came off the offensive glass. No official record book exists for single-game totals for either the program or the SUNYAC. The record for rebounds in a SUNYAC Tournament game is 22.

Neither team could establish momentum in the first 13 minutes of play, but New Paltz closed the first half on a 20-7 run, during which seven Hawk players scored. Junior guard/forward Samantha DelGaudio's (Northport, N.Y.) layup with 48 seconds remaining in the half ended up giving the Hawks their 12-point halftime lead (39-27).

The Blue Devils, however, clawed their way back into it in the second half, and a three-pointer by Jenna Austin with 13:58 to go in regulation cut the deficit to three at 46-43. Bradley then scored four straight points to stretch the lead to eight, and her free throw with 8:39 remaining in the second half swelled the New Paltz edge to 13.

Austin made things interesting when she converted on an old-fashioned three-point play with 1:54 remaining in the second to trim the Hawk cushion to six. Fredonia could not get any closer, as New Paltz hit its free throws down the stretch to ice the game.

The difference in the contest came on the boards, as the Hawks outrebounded the Blue Devils by a 58-41 margin. New Paltz shot 34.3 percent (16-of-39) from the field on the night, while Fredonia shot 29.1 percent (16-of-55) from the floor.

Sophomore guard Maliqua Fisher (North Babylon, N.Y.) scored a game-high 17 points, while junior guard Zoe Cohen (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in 11 points coming off the bench. Junior guard Caitlin Irwin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had three assists and four steals, while sophomore guard Kahsyrah Bryant (North Babylon, N.Y.) also boasted four steals. Bradley's already-impressive line was enhanced by a game-high three blocks.

For Fredonia, Austin netted 15 points, while Nicole Calbi added 14. Jamie Warren was the Blue Devils' leading rebounder with nine boards.

New Paltz returns to the hardwood tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Buffalo, N.Y., to face Buffalo State in a SUNYAC matchup at 2 p.m.
