FORT MYERS, Fla. – Two Hawk pitchers gained their first collegiate wins, as the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team (7-5) swept past Plymouth State University (1-9) in a doubleheader on Tuesday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. New Paltz won game one, 7-6, before capturing the back end of the twinbill, 6-2.
Freshman pitcher
Mike Pastorino (Stormville, N.Y.) received his first college win in the first contest, working 5 1/3 innings, scattering five hits and allowing four earned runs to go along with three walks and three strikeouts. Junior pitcher
Nick Monaco (Medford, N.Y.) preserved the victory by inheriting runners on first and third with no outs in the seventh. He walked the first batter he faced to load the bases then struck out the next two and forced the fourth batter into a fly out to right to give the Hawks the 7-6 win.
Offensively, sophomore
Thomas Pinnola (North Babylon, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while junior
Jake Cameron (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore
Matt Kaldon (Montgomery, N.Y.) also went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Freshman pitcher
Andrew Grann (Oceanside, N.Y.) threw well in the nightcap, also getting his first win as a Hawk. He threw six innings, allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out six.
The New Paltz bats combined for just five hits in game two. Cameron went 1-for-2 with a double, while freshman
Jimmy Briggs (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Freshman
Doug Marshall (Wantagh, N.Y.) slugged a double and went 1-for-3, marking his first collegiate hit.
New Paltz closes out its Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic schedule tomorrow morning, taking on Western Connecticut State University at 10 a.m. in a doubleheader.
