Hawks Equal Program Record in Single-Season Wins with 17-10 Triumph over Smith

Box Score

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Sophomore attack player Juli Rehain (Suffern, N.Y.) scored four goals, as the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team (4-0) beat Smith College (1-3), 17-10, on Tuesday afternoon in Northampton, Mass. With the victory the Hawks equaled the program record for wins in a season with four.

The 2010 edition of New Paltz women's lacrosse also had four wins, as the Hawks went 4-11 last year. Third-year head coach Heather Semelmacher owns more victories than any other coach in program history with 10.

Rehain scored twice in the first five minutes, and junior midfielder Julia Donato (Fayetteville, N.Y.) tacked on a goal seconds later to put the Hawks up, 3-0. Smith, however, countered with two goals in less than a minute, and the Pioneers cut the deficit to one. Senior midfielder Bridgitte Hooker (Glens Falls, N.Y.) and Tesler each found the back of the goal, while Alyssa Bobe scored for Smith to make it a 5-3 game. New Paltz scored five of the final seven goals of the half to take a 10-5 lead into the break.

The Hawks fired in three unanswered goals to open the half, and junior attack player Samantha DelGaudio's (Northport, N.Y.) goal with 24:34 left in regulation pushed the advantage to 13-5 in favor of New Paltz. After Sofia Nakhnikian-Weintraub scored on a free-position shot, the Hawks once again went on a three-goal tear. Smith buried four of the game's final five markers, but it was not enough, as New Paltz dealt the Pioneers their second home loss of the 2011 season.

New Paltz outshot Smith, 35-25, on the game, but the Pioneers boasted 15 draw controls to the Hawks' 14. Neither team fared well on free-position shots, as New Paltz was 2-of-8, while Smith was 3-of-10.

In addition to Rehain, Donato and freshman midfielder Talia Tesler (Rochester, N.Y.) both scored three, while senior midfielder Brittany Bennett (Smithtown, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder Brittany Hunt (Saugerties, N.Y.) each put away a pair of goals. Sophomore attack player Meredith Henshaw (Rock Tavern, N.Y.), DelGaudio and Hooker also chipped in a goal apiece for the Hawks. DelGaudio and Bennett each had a team-high two assists. Defensively, four New Paltz players had a caused turnover, while sophomore defender Regina Bates (Farmingdale, N.Y.) tied for the game-high in ground balls with two. Sophomore midfielder Erin Tornatore (Glen Cove, N.Y.) was solid off the draw, collecting four draw controls. In net, junior goalkeeper Stefanie Mignone (Farmingville, N.Y.) turned away nine shots in a full 60 minutes of action

For Smith, Meaghan Fileti, Becky Bracken and Nakhnikian-Weintraub all shared the team-high in goals with two, and M.K. Pasini and Fileti each contributed an assist. Lena Sernoff held game-high in caused turnovers with two, and Bracken boasted four draw controls. In addition, Pasini scooped up a game-high two ground balls. Meredith Kallfelz made a game-high 13 stops in between the posts for the Pioneers.

New Paltz returns to action on Thursday, March 24, attempting to reach uncharted territory against Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m.
