ONEONTA, N.Y. – With 21 seconds remaining in the second half, sophomore midfielder
Brittany Hunt (Saugerties, N.Y.) broke a 9-all tie, leading the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team (5-0) to a 10-9 victory over Hartwick College (3-1) in a non-conference contest on Thursday afternoon. The victory etches the 2011 team's place in program history, as New Paltz set the record for single-season wins by earning its fifth of the year.
The 2010 edition of New Paltz women's lacrosse held the former standard for wins in a season with four. In addition, the Hawks are riding a five-game win streak, which is the longest in the history of the program.
In a low scoring affair, both offenses heated up down the stretch, going blow-for-blow with each other. New Paltz went up, 9-8, off a goal by sophomore midfielder
Erin Tornatore (Glen Cove, N.Y.) with 2:05 to go in regulation, but Hartwick's Hannah Kennedy leveled the tally a minute later. With the contest appeared headed for overtime, Hunt took a pass from senior midfielder
Bridgitte Hooker (Glens Falls, N.Y.) and found the back of the net, and the host Hawks were unable to respond in the final 21 seconds.
Hartwick jumped out to a 2-0 lead, and New Paltz did not score until 8:02 remained on the clock in the first half. Junior midfielder

Brittany Bennett (Smithtown, N.Y.) each scored off free-position shots to round out New Paltz's offensive production in the first stanza. Hartwick took a 5-3 lead into the break.
New Paltz came out of the gates hot in the second half behind the strength of goals by sophomore attack player
Juli Rehain (Suffern, N.Y.) and Donato, tying the score at 5-all. Erin Doyle responded for Hartwick three minutes later, but back-to-back markers by sophomore attack player
Meredith Henshaw (Rock Tavern, N.Y.) and Hooker helped give the visiting Hawks their first lead of the game at 14:32 of the second half. Hartwick's Emily Walsh scored at 13:26 of the second half, and DelGaudio pushed the lead back in New Paltz's direction with 7:20 remaining in regulation. Erica Scicchitano buried a shot for Hartwick at 3:18 of the second half to knot the score at eight.
Hartwick outshot New Paltz, 28-23, on the contest and fared better on clears. The host Hawks went 16-of-19 on clear attempts, while the visiting Hawks were 14-of-22. Both teams went 2-for-4 on free-position shots.
DelGaudio and Donato each contributed a pair of goals for New Paltz, while Hooker, Bennett, Rehain, Tornatore, Hunt and Henshaw all added one. DelGaudio led the way in assists with four, while Bennett, Donato and Hooker had one helper apiece. Freshman midfielder
Talia Tesler (Rochester, N.Y.) and Tornatore tied for the game-high in caused turnovers with three each, and both boasted five ground balls. In goal, junior goalkeeper

For Hartwick, Brittany McCabe and Walsh scored twice, while Kennedy, Ryan McGovern, Scicchitano, Aly Davis and Doyle each scored once. Five Hartwick players tied for the team-high in assists with one. Three Hawks had two caused turnovers, and Jen Kay scooped up the game-high in ground balls with six. Kaye drew the start in net for Hartwick and made eight saves in the loss.
With 108 points on her career, DelGaudio is now one shy of the all-time program record of 109, which Katie Sharp set from 1999-2002.
New Paltz returns to action on Wednesday, March 30, when it takes on the University of Scranton in Scranton, Pa.
