MAHWAH, N.J. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team (1-0) relied on familiar faces to carry the Hawks to a 10-6 non-conference victory over Ramapo College (0-1) in the 2011 season opener for both teams on Wednesday afternoon in Mahwah, N.J.

Juli Rehain (Suffern, N.Y.) opened scoring in the first minute, and junior attack player
Samantha DelGaudio (Northport, N.Y.) pushed the tally to 2-0 with a score 10 minutes later. Sophomore midfielder
Erin Tornatore (Glen Cove, N.Y.) made it a 3-0 game with 10:29 remaining in the first half before Ramapo's Colleen Steel put the Roadrunners on the scoreboard with 8:45 to go in the period off of a free position shot. Senior midfielder
Bridgitte Hooker (Glens Falls, N.Y.) became the fourth Hawk to find the back of the net at 7:04 of the first half, but Ramapo scored a pair of goals to close the first stanza. Amanda Barretta offered a marker with 2:23 to go in the half, while Rachael Viscusi cashed in on a Jenna Pfarr pass just 36 seconds later. New Paltz took a 4-3 lead into the intermission.
Pfarr leveled the score at 4-all when she converted on a free position shot in the first two minutes of the second half, but DelGaudio scored her second goal of the contest with 25:38 remaining in regulation to put the Hawks back on top. Pfarr took a Barretta pass into the back of the goal less than a minute later, but Rehain, Hooker and junior midfielder
Julia Donato (Fayetteville, N.Y.) scored three unanswered to give New Paltz an 8-5 edge. Steel buried a shot with 20 minutes left to play in the second half, but Tornatore and freshman midfielder
Talia Tesler (Rochester, N.Y.) scored in the final 10 minutes, while the Hawk defense held the Roadrunners scoreless down the stretch.
New Paltz held the upper hand in shots, 26-23, and went 6-for-7 on clear attempts. Ramapo was a perfect 5-for-5 on its clear attempts.

Stefanie Mignone (Farmingville, N.Y.) had a stellar performance in between the pipes for New Paltz, turning aside 10 shots and holding Ramapo to a 2-for-9 mark on free position shots. Sophomore defender
Regina Bates (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scooped up a team-high four ground balls, while Tornatore and senior midfielder
Brittany Bennett (Smithtown, N.Y.) each had three draw controls. Tornatore caused a game-high four turnovers.
For Ramapo, Steel and Pfarr each had two goals, while Barretta and Viscusi boasted one apiece. Pfarr dished out two assists, while Barretta handed out one. Diana Silva sustained the loss in goal for the Roadrunners, making nine stops and holding the Hawks 0-for-2 on free position attempts. Barretta led Ramapo off the draw with two draw controls, while Farr and Lindsey Jachens posted the team-highs in ground balls and caused turnovers, respectively, with four and two.
New Paltz entertains Farmingdale State on Saturday, March 12, at 1 p.m. in its 2011 home opener on the Turf Field.
