OSWEGO, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team (6-7, 0-5 SUNYAC) outscored SUNY Oswego (6-4, 2-3 SUNYAC), 9-5, in the second half, but the host Lakers held on to beat the Hawks by a 16-14 final in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Tuesday afternoon at South Athletic Field.
Oswego hopped out to a 2-0 lead early, and junior attack player
Samantha DelGaudio (Northport, N.Y.) scored to cut the deficit in half. Rachael Raffa found the back of the net to put the Lakers back up by two at 3-1 before the Hawks went on a three- goal spurt, and a score by sophomore attack player
Juli Rehain (Suffern, N.Y.) gave New Paltz its first and only lead of the game at 4-3. Oswego countered by scoring eight of the final nine goals in the first half and took an 11-5 lead into the intermission.
Senior midfielders
Brittany Bennett (Smithtown, N.Y.) and
Bridgitte Hooker (Glens Falls, N.Y.) and Rehain scored to put the tally at 11-8 in favor of Oswego, but the Lakers ripped off two consecutive markers to push the score to 13-8. New Paltz would slowly reel in Oswego, but the Hawks' efforts came too late. Despite two goals in the final minute, they shouldered their fifth conference defeat of the season.
Both teams had 30 shots and possessed the ball well. New Paltz was 17-of-18 on clear attempts, while Oswego was 19-of-22. The Lakers held the upper hand off the draw, controlling 18 draws to the Hawks' 13.
Hooker paced the Hawk attack with six goals and one assist, while DelGaudio boasted three goals and two assists. DelGaudio's five points allowed her to establish the single-season record for points (51), resetting her 2010 mark of 48. Rashidat Soetan (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also chipped in a marker for New Paltz. Hooker kept the Hawks in the game defensively with eight ground balls, and four different New Paltz players caused a turnover. Junior goalkeeper
Stefanie Mignone (Farmingville, N.Y.) was shouldered with the loss, as she stopped 11 shots in net for the Hawks across 60 minutes of action.
For Oswego, Raffa and Bri Borrow tied for the game-high in goals with four each. Erin Cummings had two goals and two assists, while Kelly Schroder, Kristen Darcy, Michelle Ruskey, Corinne Marsh, Danielle Citro and Kelly Collins also scored once. Schroder handed out two assists, while Liz Conrad, Stephanie Cronk, Darcy, Megan McNulty and Raffa each provided one. Ashlee Engel received the victory in between the pipes for the Lakers, turning aside nine shots.
New Paltz continues its four-game road swing on Thursday, April 21, squaring off against non-conference Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y., at 7 p.m.
