Hawks Fall Short in SUNYAC Opener; Lose to Fredonia, 18-7

Box Score

FREDONIA, N.Y
. – In search for its first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win since the program was reinstated for the 2009 season, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team (5-2, 0-1 SUNYAC) fell short, dropping its 2011 league opener against SUNY Fredonia (8-1, 1-0 SUNYAC) by an 18-7 final on Saturday afternoon at University Stadium.

New Paltz went up early, but a 12-0 Fredonia run to close the first half gave the host Blue Devils a double-digit halftime lead. The Hawks went on a 4-0 run to start the second stanza, which cut the Fredonia lead to eight. The Blue Devils, however, countered with a 4-0 tear that put the game on ice.

On the afternoon, Fredonia outshot New Paltz, 33-14.

Junior midfielder Julia Donato (Fayetteville, N.Y.) scored three goals to lead the Hawks, while sophomore attack player Juli Rehain (Suffern, N.Y.), senior midfielder Bridgitte Hooker (Glens Falls, N.Y.), freshman midfielder Talia Tesler (Rochester, N.Y.) and senior midfielder Brittany Bennett (Smithtown, N.Y.) boasted one score each. Junior goalkeeper Stefanie Mignone (Farmingville, N.Y.) turned aside six shots in net for the Hawks.

Amy Simon keyed the Blue Devil offense with four goals, while Marissa Cussins and Rachael Reinis chipped in three each. Karli Brinthaupt and Maddison Frink offered a pair of markers apiece, while Laura Culhane and Taylor Wingerden each scored once. Protecting the Fredonia goal, Casey Chiesa had four saves.

New Paltz looks to return to its winning ways on Wednesday, April 6, hosting Vassar College at 4 p.m. in a non-conference clash.
