FREDONIA, N.Y. – In search for its first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win since the program was reinstated for the 2009 season, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team (5-2, 0-1 SUNYAC) fell short, dropping its 2011 league opener against SUNY Fredonia (8-1, 1-0 SUNYAC) by an 18-7 final on Saturday afternoon at University Stadium.
New Paltz went up early, but a 12-0 Fredonia run to close the first half gave the host Blue Devils a double-digit halftime lead. The Hawks went on a 4-0 run to start the second stanza, which cut the Fredonia lead to eight. The Blue Devils, however, countered with a 4-0 tear that put the game on ice.
On the afternoon, Fredonia outshot New Paltz, 33-14.
