New Paltz Overwhelmed by Geneseo in 18-5 Loss

GENESEO, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team (7-8, 0-6 SUNYAC) suffered an 18-5 setback at the hands of SUNY Geneseo (10-2, 4-2 SUNYAC) Saturday morning in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action.

The Hawks were outmatched from the start, as Geneseo opened by taking a 4-0 lead. Sophomore attack player Juli Rehain (Suffern, N.Y.) scored New Paltz's first goal at 12:28 of the first half, but the Blue Knights scored four unanswered to push the lead to seven at 8-1. New Paltz scored two of the final three markers of the stanza to cut the deficit to six (9-3) heading into the break.

Geneseo scored twice to start the second half, and freshman midfielder Talia Tesler (Rochester, N.Y.) and Rehain netted back-to-back goals to draw New Paltz back within six at 11-5. The Blue Knights, however, held the Hawks scoreless down the stretch and closed the contest by burying seven goals in the final 20:25 of regulation.

The stat sheet reflected the lopsided nature of the game. Geneseo outshot New Paltz, 35-22, and controlled 20 draws to the Hawks' five. The Blue Knights were 3-for-6 on free-position shots, while the Hawks were 0-for-1.

Rehain led the New Paltz offense with two goals, while Tesler and senior midfielders Bridgitte Hooker (Glens Falls, N.Y.) and Brittany Bennett (Smithtown, N.Y.) each scored once. Junior attack player Samantha DelGaudio (Northport, N.Y.) chipped in with two assists, while sophomore midfielder Brittany Hunt (Saugerties, N.Y.) added one. In net, junior goalkeeper Stefanie Mignone (Farmingville, N.Y.) stopped 14 shots and caused three turnovers in a full 60 minutes of action.

Geneseo had nine different players score, with Emily Haggerty's five goals leading the way. Cassie Broton netted four markers, while Lauren Burgoon and Caroline Buonocore each scored twice. Casie Damore, Lea Paris, Anna Hutchings, Rachel Petrone and Megan Blaich rounded out the Blue Knights' goal scorers. Buonocore caused a game-high four turnovers, while Petrone scooped up a game-high six ground balls. Annie Smith earned the win in net, making 12 saves across 43:32, before Julie Bernatzky took over and turned aside three shots in 16 minutes, 28 seconds of action.

New Paltz hopes for a reversal of fortunes on Tuesday, April 26, taking on SUNY Potsdam in a SUNYAC game at 4 p.m. in Potsdam, N.Y.
