FREDONIA, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team (18-14, 8-7 SUNYAC) split in two State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) games on Sunday afternoon at Ludwig Field on the campus of SUNY Fredonia. The Hawks won, 10-0, against Fredonia (14-17, 2-13 SUNYAC) in game one before falling, 6-0, to The College at Brockport (19-9, 8-5 SUNYAC) in the nightcap.
New Paltz scored nine runs in the first two innings to build a 9-0 edge against the Blue Devils and plated one in the ninth to round out the final tally.
On the hill for New Paltz, junior pitcher
John Schmidt (East Islip, N.Y.) gained the victory, working seven innings and allowing two hits and four walks to go along with five strikeouts. Freshman pitchers
Mike Pastorino (Stormville, N.Y.) and
Dylan Babcock (Vails Gate, N.Y.) combined to give up one hit and one walk with five strikeouts in two innings of relief. Fredonia's Angelo Sciandra was tagged with the loss, going 1 2/3 innings. He gave up six runs—five of which were earned—off seven hits and one walk.
Offensively for the Hawks, junior shortstop
Paul Merola (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored, sophomore right fielder
Thomas Pinnola (North Babylon, N.Y.) batted 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI and sophomore third baseman
Matt Prescia (Oakdale, N.Y.) was 2-for-5 with one run scored and two RBI. The Blue Devil bats combined for just three hits.
In the second game of the day against Brockport, sophomore pitcher
Michael Pinnola (North Babylon, N.Y.) threw seven scoreless innings before allowing two batters to reach in the eighth—one off of a walk and another off of an error. Freshman pitcher
James McKenna (Bohemia, N.Y.) then took over and yielded four hits, and three unearned runs were eventually charged to him in addition to two runs (one unearned) charged to Pinnola. By the time the inning ended, a one-run deficit swelled up to a 6-0 Brockport lead.
Despite starting the top of the ninth with back-to-back singles, the Golden Eagles were able to record three straight outs, and a double play off of a lineout to left ended the game.
Brockport tapped the Hawk pitching staff for six runs off 10 hits, while New Paltz scattered five hits in the shutout defeat.
Pinnola shouldered the loss, while Kyle Smith threw a complete-game shutout in the winning effort, allowing five hits while striking out nine.
Junior third baseman
Mike Marash (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) batted 2-for-4 to power the Hawk offense, while Tom McCormick and Mike Goldstein each went 2-for-4 for the Golden Eagles.
New Paltz returns to action on Tuesday, April 26, hosting John Jay College of Criminal Justice at 4 p.m. at Loren Campbell Memorial Field in a non-conference single game.
