Box Score
POTSDAM, N.Y. – Junior attack player
Samantha DelGaudio (Northport, N.Y.) tied the program's all-time single-season and career goal records, while sophomore midfielder
Erin Tornatore (Glen Cove, N.Y.) established a single-season mark in draw controls, but the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team (7-9, 0-7 SUNYAC) was unable to overcome SUNY Potsdam (5-11, 1-7 SUNYAC) on Tuesday afternoon, falling by a 13-12 final in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action at Maxcy Turf Field.
DelGaudio now has 36 goals on the season and 97 on her career. Her single-season total equals Megan Porter's output from 2001, while her career accumulation matches Katie Sharp's program mark that she set from 1999-2002. Tornatore's 43 draw controls eclipses the former single-season record of 42, which
Brittany Bennett set back in 2010.
New Paltz built a 2-0 lead in the opening minutes of the game, but Potsdam countered with five straight goals to take a 5-2 edge. DelGaudio and Tornatore scored back-to-back markers, but the Bears rattled off two straight to keep the three-goal cushion. The Hawks then put away three consecutive scores to knot the tally at 7-all with 6:31 left in the first half, but Potsdam recaptured the advantage heading into the halftime by scoring three of the final four goals of first stanza, taking a 10-8 lead into the break.
Scoring tapered off in the second half, as a stretch of more than 10 minutes elapsed between goals midway through the period. Tornatore drew the Hawks within two at 12-10 with 9:15 remaining in regulation, but Maribeth Simmons responded one minute later to give the Bears a 13-10 edge. Senior midfielder
Bridgitte Hooker (Glens Falls, N.Y.) cashed in on a pass from sophomore midfielder
Brittany Hunt (Saugerties, N.Y.), while senior midfielder
Brittany Bennett (Smithtown, N.Y.) scored on a free-position shot with 1:17 to go in regulation to pull New Paltz within one. The Hawks were unable to produce the game-tying goal in the final minute, and Potsdam snapped a seven-game losing streak with the triumph.
Potsdam outshot New Paltz, 38-28, and went 16-of-18 on clear attempts compared to the Hawks' 12-of-25 performance. New Paltz was slightly superior off the draw with 14 draw controls to Potsdam's 13.
Hooker led the New Paltz offense with five goals, while DelGaudio and Tornatore each scored a pair. Freshman midfielder
Talia Tesler (Rochester, N.Y.), Bennett and sophomore attack player
Juli Rehain (Suffern, N.Y.) each found the back of the net once, while Hunt and Bennett boasted two assists apiece. Junior goalkeeper
Stefanie Mignone (Farmingville, N.Y.) stood tall in between the pipes, turning aside 17 shots.
For Potsdam, Simmons led the way with four goals, while Carly Richards, Sierra Langkammerer and Whitney Boshart all pitched in with a pair of markers. Lizzy Penree, Sam Brown and Kathleen Frear rounded out the Bears' scorers. Richards had two assists, while Boshart, Langkammerer, Penree and Simmons each boasted one helper. Kaci Milligan was charged with protecting the Potsdam net and picked up the win, making 10 stops on the afternoon.
New Paltz concludes its season on Saturday, April 30, with a 1 p.m. SUNYAC game against Buffalo State at the Turf Field. Prior to the start of the contest, the Hawks will recognize their three seniors.
