BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Sophomore pitcher
Chris Chismar (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) pitched a complete-game shutout in the second game of a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, salvaging a split on the day for the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team (10-9, 2-3 SUNYAC) against The College at Brockport (12-7, 1-4 SUNYAC). The Hawks lost, 4-1, in game one before rallying back for a 9-0 victory in the nightcap.
Per conference doubleheader regulations, the second game of the doubleheader was seven innings in duration.
The Golden Eagles had a four-run second in the front end of the twinbill and pounded out four hits, generating a 4-0 lead. The Hawks, however, were unable to reach the scoreboard until the top of the ninth. Freshman left fielder
Jimmy Briggs (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) broke up the Golden Eagles' shutout bid by driving in a run with two outs in the frame.
Sophomore pitcher
Michael Pinnola (North Babylon, N.Y.) was charged with the loss in game one, giving up four runs on seven hits, three walks and two hit by pitches across seven innings of work. He also struck out two batters. Freshman pitcher
Andrew Grann (Oceanside, N.Y.) threw two innings of scoreless relief, yielding just one hit and three walks while striking out one.
Kyle Smith had a complete-game seven-hitter on the hill for Brockport, striking out 12 Hawk batters in the victory.
Sophomore center fielder
Thomas Pinnola (North Babylon, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with one run scored to pace the New Paltz attack in the first tilt of the day, while Corey Booth, Mike Weakley and Kyle Tracey each went 2-for-3 for Brockport.
Freshman catcher
David Lostaglio's (Milton, N.Y.) two-run double in the top of the first was a sign of things to come for the Hawks in the nightcap, as New Paltz rode Chismar's gem to a 9-0 shutout win. Lostaglio blew the game open in the fourth, as he hit a three-run homer to push the score to 7-0 in favor of the visitors. Junior designated hitter/first baseman
Jake Cameron (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) capped off the Hawks' scoring in the sixth when he blasted a two-run shot over the outfield fence.
Chismar walked just one batter and scattered four hits across seven innings of duty, gaining the win. He also added six strikeouts. Brockport's Mark Ciccotti was tagged with the loss after accounting for three runs in one frame of work. Four additional Golden Eagles came in and tossed in relief, and all but one (Steve Locke) gave up a run.
The New Paltz bats were hot, as Cameron went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI off two doubles and a home run. Cameron now has hit safely in 15 consecutive games. Lostaglio had one run scored and five RBI, going 2-for-3 on the afternoon. Four different Golden Eagles registered a hit.
The Hawks return to action on Tuesday, April 5, taking on Hudson Valley rival Mount Saint Mary College at 7 p.m. in Newburgh, N.Y.
