OSWEGO, N.Y. – After rain halted play in the top of the second inning of game one on Friday afternoon, the State University of New York at New Paltz softball team (9-6, 1-1 SUNYAC) split in a rescheduled State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader against SUNY Oswego (5-8, 1-3 SUNYAC) on Sunday afternoon at Laker Softball Field. The Hawks won game one, 10-8, before falling in a no-hit bid in game two, 9-0, in five innings.

In the top of the fourth inning in game one, senior center fielder Jillian Gallagher (Buchanan, N.Y.) became the program's all-time steals leader with 42 on her career. Lauren Motzkin held the former record of 41, which she set from 2005-08.

Oswego's Jessica Palmitesso was the pitcher of record in both contests, shouldering the loss in game one before throwing a no-hit, complete game shutout in the back end of the twinbill. Palmitesso tossed the first Laker shutout since May 12, 2009.

In the first inning of the first contest on Friday, freshman shortstop Chelsea Kull (Manorville, N.Y.) ripped a grand slam home run to straightaway center, giving New Paltz a 4-0 lead. Dee Apps hit an RBI single in the bottom of the frame, which plated Sammie Schroeter. Rain and field conditions after that inning, however, pushed the make-up to Sunday, and both teams resumed their offensive production.

Schroeter hit a two-run homer in the home half of the second to make it a one-run game at 4-3, but junior catcher Jenna Curcio (Conklin, N.Y.) pushed across junior designated player Shelby Martin (New Paltz, N.Y.) in the fourth to get one back for the Hawks.

New Paltz scored another in the fourth before the Lakers countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull within one at 6-5. Junior left fielder Kristen Schork (Warwick, N.Y.), Liotta and Kull all scored in the top of the sixth, however, to push the tally to 9-5, but Oswego stuffed two more runs in the run column in the bottom of the frame. Jillian Gallagher used strong base running to score in the top half of the seventh, and sophomore pitcher Gillian Davidoff (Oceanside, N.Y.) got the Hawks out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the inning to secure the game one victory.

Senior pitcher Courtney Costello (Bayport, N.Y.) was credited with the win in the circle for New Paltz, working 4 2/3 innings. She yielded five runs--three of which were earned--on nine hits and one walk in addition to striking out four. Freshman pitcher Emily Collazo (East Meadow, N.Y.) gave up three runs on five hits and two walks in 1 1/3 innings before Davidoff took over and retired three straight batters to end the game, earning the save.

Palmitesso surrendered four runs on two hits and five walks in just one-third of an inning before being pulled in favor of Sarah Thayer. Thayer worked the remainder of the game, going 6 2/3 frames and yielding six runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out five.

For New Paltz, Gallagher, Liotta, Kull and Curcio all went 2-for-4, while Martin batted 2-for-3. Oswego was led by Schroeter, who went 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBI in the lead-off spot in the Laker lineup.

The tables turned in the nightcap, as the Lakers dominated from start to finish. Palmitesso issued just two walks the entire tilt, and the Hawks were unable to muster a hit.

Davidoff shouldered the loss in the circle for New Paltz, giving up eight runs--three of which were earned--off eight hits and two walks. She also struck out two. Palmitesso had four strikeouts for Oswego and gained the winning decision.

Apps, Paige Anderson, Katie Bredin and Nicole Ouellette each had two hits for the Lakers, while Anderson drove in a series-high five runs.

New Paltz returns to action on Wednesday, April 6, taking on Manhattanville College in a non-conference twinbill at 3 p.m. in Purchase, N.Y.
