NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – With one goal on the afternoon, junior attack player
Samantha DelGaudio (Northport, N.Y.) became the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team's (7-10, 0-8 SUNYAC) all-time leading scorer, but the Hawks fell, 20-10, in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) clash to Buffalo State (12-4, 7-1 SUNYAC) on Saturday afternoon at the Turf Field on Senior Day.
At 13:29 of the second half, DelGaudio established two milestones with one goal. She became the program's all-time leading scorer with 98 career goals to her credit, surpassing Katie Sharp's total of 97, which she accumulated from 1999-2002. In addition, she wiped out the single-season program record in goals with her 37th of the year, erasing Megan Porter's former standard of 36 that she set in 2001.
Competing in their final game of 2011, the Hawks bade farewell to their three seniors in a pregame ceremony: defender
Gabrielle Dewey (Tully, N.Y.) and midfielders
Bridgitte Hooker (Glens Falls, N.Y.) and
Brittany Bennett (Smithtown, N.Y.).
The contest was lopsided early on, as Buffalo State built up a 13-1 lead with 6:31 left in the first half. The Hawks gained some momentum heading into the break, as sophomore midfielder
Erin Tornatore (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and freshman attack player
Rashidat Soetan (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each provided markers in the final minute of play.
New Paltz saved face in the final 30 minutes of action, equaling the Bengals' second-half scoring output with seven goals. Bennett, Hooker and Tornatore netted three of the contest's final five scores, and the Hawks finished the tilt trailing by just 10.
It marked just the seventh time this year that Buffalo State has conceded 10 or more goals. Only two other SUNYAC opponents—SUNY Cortland and SUNY Geneseo—have been able to do so.
The Bengals outshot the Hawks, 33-24, and both sides controlled 16 draws. Buffalo State, however was 13-of-15 on clear attempts, while New Paltz was just 6-of-14.
Tornatore scored a team-high four goals for the Hawks, while sophomore midfielder
Brittany Hunt (Saugerties, N.Y.), freshman midfielder
Talia Tesler (Rochester, N.Y.), Hooker, Bennett and DelGaudio each scored once. Junior goalkeeper
Stefanie Mignone (Farmingville, N.Y.) made nine stops in net for New Paltz, playing the full 60 minutes.
For Buffalo State, Karen Shaddock scored five goals, while Becca Martinez and Molly Seifritz each netted four. Ashley Caporizzo, Mariah DeBolt and Jenn Shaddock all found the back of the net twice, while Maggie Sharp chipped in one score. Ashley O'Brien got the win protecting the Bengal net, turning aside seven shots.
New Paltz finishes the season with a program-record win total of seven. The team established a new program standard for consecutive victories, as the Hawks started the year 5-0.
