ONEONTA, N.Y. – Despite two strong outings from its pitching staff, the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team's bats were quieted, as the Hawks (10-12, 2-5 SUNYAC) lost by scores of 1-0 and 5-1 against SUNY Oneonta (15-6, 8-0 SUNYAC) on Saturday afternoon in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader at Red Dragon Field.
New Paltz pounded out four hits in game one, which was a seven-inning contest, but the Hawk offense was unable to put a run on the board. Five Hawk runners were left stranded. Conversely, Oneonta had just one hit, but a Michael DeCarr grounder in the third brought in Michael Center for the only run of the game.
Sophomore pitcher
Chris Chismar (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and Oneonta's Ken Smith battled it out on the mound, as the two combined to surrender just five hits. Chismar was the tough-luck loser, working six innings and striking out six while allowing one run off one hit and two walks. Smith gained the win, scattering four hits across seven innings and issuing two walks while fanning seven Hawk batters.
Junior shortstop
Paul Merola (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y.) was the lone bright spot on New Paltz's offensive performance in game one, as he went 2-for-3.
Junior designated hitter
Jake Cameron (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) helped open scoring in the nightcap, as he got aboard in the in the top half of the fourth off a deep fly ball that nicked off the right fielder's glove. Sophomore third baseman
Matt Prescia (Oakdale, N.Y.) drove him in the ensuing at-bat, giving New Paltz a 1-0 lead.
Kevin Knack's three-run triple in the fifth tilted the momentum and score in favor of the Red Dragons, and Oneonta extended its lead in the sixth. Chris Tyson came out of the bullpen for the Red Dragons and kept the Hawks in check down the stretch, dealing New Paltz its second loss of the day.
Freshman pitcher
Andrew Grann (Oceanside, N.Y.) drew the start on the mound for the Hawks and was shouldered with the loss, lasting six innings. He scattered eight hits and allowed five runs—four of which were earned—to go along with his five strikeouts. Freshman pitcher
James McKenna (Bohemia, N.Y.) tossed the final two innings for New Paltz and retired all six batters he faced.
Christopher Smith moved to 3-1 on the year with the victory on the bump for Oneonta in the back end of the doubleheader. He went 5 1/3 innings, allowing one run off two hits and three walks while striking out five. Tyson earned the save after giving up just one hit and two walks.
No Hawk registered more than one hit, while Knack, Bryan Marotta and Jonathan Wolfanger all had multi-hit outings for the Red Dragons.
The Hawks look to avoid a series sweep tomorrow afternoon, as they return to Red Dragon Field to face Oneonta in a single nine-inning game. First pitch is set for noon.
