Field Hockey Falls to No. 7 Skidmore College, 5-2

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (2-2) took an early 1-0 lead against No. 7 Skidmore College (3-0), but couldn't hold the advantage as the Thoroughbreds defeated the Hawks, 5-2, in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at the Turf Field.

Annie Rosencrans led the Thoroughbreds scoring attack with a hat trick, scoring Skidmore's first, third and fourth goals. Her final goal came in the 58th minute, mere minutes after the Hawks had tightened the score to 3-2, effectively closing the door on the Hawks' comeback.

New Paltz took its early lead on a goal by freshman forward Stacey Miller (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) in the 10th minute, scoring off a penalty corner assisted from freshman Deirdre O'Neill (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and sophomore Danielle Conklin (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern).

Skidmore retaliated by scoring off a penalty corner of its own at 18:53, Rosencrans' first goal of the day, fed by Lauren Tobias and Kelly Blackhurst. Tobias would close the first stanza scoring with a goal of her own in the 30th minute, giving Skidmore a 2-1 halftime lead.

Coming out of half, Skidmore extended its lead with Rosencrans' second goal of the match in the 52nd minute, taking a pass through the heart of the Hawks' defense from Sam Revera and hitting net to put the Thoroughbreds up two.

Down 3-1, senior forward Maryana Organidis (Belford, N.J./Henry Hudson Regional) responded quickly, taking a pass from Miller to bring the Hawks within a goal in the 54th minute. From there, Skidmore's attack beat New Paltz sophomore goalkeeper Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) for two more goals to seal the decision.

Pjetri had seven saves on the day from Skidmore's 21 shots. New Paltz had seven shots, three of which were saved by Skidmore goalkeeper Amy Beck in her first start of the season.

The Hawks start play in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) on Friday, Sept. 16 at home versus SUNY Oneonta at 4 p.m.
