ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.
– Senior midfielder/forward Tommy Garafola (Richmond Hill, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) scored a penalty-kick goal in the 64th minute, leading the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team (2-2-0) to a 1-0 victory over the Polytechnic Institute of New York University (0-3-1) on Saturday evening on the opening day of the Bard Classic.

Garafola's penalty kick came after a Blue Jay defender was whistled for a hand-ball foul in the penalty area, and his goal served as his first of the season.

The Hawks dominated the possession game and also outshot NYU-Polytechnic by a 13-3 edge. Sophomore goalkeeper Conor Power (White Plains, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) earned the shutout, making one save in a full 90 minutes of work. NYU-Polytechnic's Rishi Sarkar shouldered the loss and made a game-high four stops.

New Paltz continues action at the Bard Classic tomorrow, contesting Green Mountain College at 1 p.m.
