ONEONTA, N.Y. – Senior outside hitter
Melinda DiGiovanna (West Hempstead, N.Y./West Hempstead) became just the seventh student-athlete in the history of the State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball program to reach the 1,000-kill plateau, as she totaled 36 across a pair of matches against No. 20 SUNY Cortland and SUNY Plattsburgh on the first day of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) East Division Pool Play Friday afternoon at SUNY Oneonta. The Hawks lost, 3-2 (25-22, 14-25, 17-25, 25-21, 15-13), to the Red Dragons before topping the Cardinals, 3-2 (20-25, 25-18, 25-15, 17-25, 15-1).
DiGiovanna now boasts 1,018 kills on her career and seeks to move up the program's all-time chart in the statistical category, as she ranks seventh all-time.
New Paltz (8-7, 1-1 SUNYAC East) led, 8-4, at the turn in the deciding set against Cortland, but the Red Dragons battled back to take the set and the match. Sophomore setter

Against the Cardinals, DiGiovanna racked up 21 kills, 15 digs and three blocks, while freshman outside hitter
Bridget Haggerty (Troy, N.Y./Troy) chipped in with eight kills. Hack and Garmendia shored up the defensive front once again with 25 and 21 digs, respectively.
The Hawks close out the first round of SUNYAC East Division Pool Play tomorrow, taking on host Oneonta at 10 a.m. and SUNY Potsdam at noon.
