ONEONTA, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team (10-7, 3-1 SUNYAC East) pulled out wins over SUNY Oneonta and SUNY Potsdam on the second day of the first round of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) East Division Pool Play at Oneonta Saturday, beating the host Red Dragons, 3-1 (25-13, 17-25, 25-17, 25-20), before topping the Bears, 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-15).
Against Oneonta, junior middle hitter
Laura Stanhewicz (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) paced the attack with 13 kills, while senior outside hitter
Melinda DiGiovanna (West Hempstead, N.Y./West Hempstead) boasted a double-double with 12 kills and 18 digs. Sophomore libero
Carrie Hack (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) was just two digs shy of the 30-dig club with 28, while sophomore setter
Marissa King (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) handed out 23 assists.
In the Potsdam match, everyone saw action, as the Hawks won in straight sets. DiGiovanna recorded seven kills and 17 digs, while sophomore middle hitter Elizabeth Hauser (East Williston, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) floored five kills and King dished out 19 assists.
New Paltz returns to the court on Wednesday, Sept. 28, taking on The Sage Colleges in a non-conference match at 7 p.m. in the Hawk Center.
