Hawk Women’s Soccer Evens Record with 8-0 Win over Maritime

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – A seven-goal first half propelled the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team (1-1-0) to an 8-0 victory over SUNY Maritime (1-1-0) on Saturday morning in the opening game of the Michelle Vargas-Robin Memorial Tournament at Alumni Field.

Junior forward Shelby Kondelka (Bloomingburg, N.Y./Pine Bush) scored twice for the Hawks in the victory, finding the back of the net at 25:27 and 40:20. Freshman midfielder Rebecca Rothman (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) collected three assists on the match, while junior midfielder Sarah DeMarzo (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) gathered two.

Senior midfielder Sherri Lajoie (River Edge, N.Y./River Dell), junior forward Samantha Abravanel (Islip, N.Y./Islip), junior midfielder Beth Bowling (Islip, N.Y./Islip), freshman forward Sarah Painter (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and senior defender Shannon Cobb (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) each scored, while senior midfielder Alexa Balestrieri (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) and Bowling were credited with one assist each.

New Paltz outshot Maritime by a 45-3 margin, and 24 of those shots were on frame. The Hawks also gained 10 corner kicks to the Privateers' one.

Junior goalkeeper Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y./Baldwin Senior) made two saves in 45 minutes of work, while freshman goalkeeper Kristen Tillyer (Kenvil, N.J./Roxbury) took over at the start of the second half and made one save. Both combined for a clean sheet.

Courtney Marietta turned aside a match-high 12 shots in goal for Maritime, and the defense posted four team saves.

In the 1:30 p.m. match, New Jersey City University dispatched SUNY Canton, 8-0. Canton and Maritime play tomorrow at 11 a.m.

New Paltz returns to the pitch tomorrow at 1:30 p.m., squaring off with New Jersey City on the second and final day of the Michelle Vargas-Robin Memorial Tournament.
