Box Score
OSWEGO, N.Y. – Chad Burridge scored a game-high 27 points for No. 22 SUNY Oswego (10-3, 6-0 SUNYAC), which ultimately doomed the State University of New York at New Paltz men's basketball team (6-6, 3-3 SUNYAC) in an 84-62 loss to the Lakers on Friday night in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action at Max Ziel Gymnasium.
New Paltz was led offensively by junior forward
Matt Devine (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold Township), who scored 19 points off 6-of-15 shooting from the floor and 7-of-9 shooting from the free-throw line. Senior guard/forward
Harris Wichard (Merrick, N.Y./Bellmore JFK) drained 11 points off 5-of-10 shooting from the field, serving as the only other Hawk to reach double figures. Freshman forward/center
Alan Siergiej (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by-the-Sea) paced the team in boards with five, while freshman guard
Josh Engler (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) offered a team-high three assists coming off the bench.
Beyond Burridge, the Lakers had two other double-digit point scorers in Chris Gilkes and Hayden Ward. Gilkes dished out a game-high six assists, while Ward gathered a game-high nine rebounds.
For the game, New Paltz shot 44.9 percent (22-of-49) from the field compared to Oswego's 56.7 percent (34-of-60) clip. The Hawks were especially hurt by their three-point shooting, which has oftentimes been their biggest boost this season. They shot just 4-of-17 (23.5 percent) from long range. Each team shot 66.7 percent from the line, while both squads took care of the ball, with the Hawks committing 10 turnovers and the Lakers coughing the ball up on five occasions. Oswego held a slight 32-29 edge on the glass as well.
Oswego never trailed in this one-sided affair, scoring the first nine points until Wichard stopped the bleeding with the Hawks' first bucket at 17:30 of the first half. Devine scored to make it a five-point game at 9-4, but the Lakers kept extending the advantage until it swelled to double digits at 18-8 at 14:32 of the first half. A 10-4 Hawk run, however, pulled New Paltz within four, as a Wichard three-pointer made the score 22-18 in favor of Oswego. A 13-0 Laker spurt midway through the half, however, ultimately buried the Hawks, as they were never able to come within single digits the remainder of the contest.
The closest New Paltz got in the second half was within 16 points of Oswego, which happened twice: once when Devine converted on an old-fashioned three-point play at 4:12 of the second half and once when Wichard dropped in a layup at 3:17 of the second half.
The Hawks will look to right the ship tomorrow afternoon, facing SUNY Cortland in a league contest at 4 p.m. in Cortland, N.Y.
