SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – On a day in which it went 3-0, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team (21-3) brought home the Tom Hay Women's Volleyball Invitational title on Saturday at Springfield College. The Hawks beat Plymouth State University, 3-1 (25-21, 12-25, 25-12, 25-15), Colby-Sawyer College, 3-1 (21-25, 25-10, 25-19, 25-18), and host Springfield, 3-2 (15-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-15, 15-5).
For the weekend, the Hawks were 4-0, which included a Friday night win over Westfield State University. With the four wins, New Paltz extended its winning streak to 10 matches.
Junior setter
Marissa King (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) was named the Tournament MVP, while senior middle hitter
Dana Vosilla (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) joined King on the All-Tournament Team.
Against Plymouth State, freshman outside hitter
Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) led the way with 11 kills and 16 digs, while senior outside hitter
Michelle Jacobson (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) boasted 10 kills and 11 digs. Vosilla landed 10 kills and had a block, while junior libero
Carrie Hack (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) and King had 23 digs and 44 assists, respectively.
Versus Colby-Sawyer, junior middle hitter
Liz Hauser (East Williston, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) hit .571 (13-1-21) and floored a block, while Borquist tallied 12 kills, 15 digs and three blocks. Vosilla caused problems for the Chargers with 10 kills eight blocks, while Hack and King collected 21 digs and 41 assists, respectively.
After trailing, 2-0, the Hawks pieced together three sets in which it hit no worse than .379, as they downed the host Pride in five sets. Jacobson's 21 kills and 20 digs keyed the Hawks both on offense and on defense, while senior right side
Eleanor Skovgaard (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford-Sutherland) picked up 14 kills and hit .344. Hack totaled a match-high 24 digs, while King handed out 59 assists and floored four service aces.
New Paltz's challenging October continues, as it visits Williams College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10.
