Women’s Swimming Cruises to 140-88 Victory over Vassar

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team (2-0) won all but one of the 14 events contested against Vassar College (2-3), as the Hawks rolled to a 140-88 victory over their cross-river rivals on Saturday at Elting Pool. Four Hawks won multiple individual events.

Freshman Cassidy Griger (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown Central), junior Chelsea Allocco (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), senior Carly Marshall (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central) and junior Victoria Scalise (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) each picked up a pair of individual event wins. Griger won both the 1,000 freestyle (11:09.04) and the 200 backstroke (2:18.71), Allocco claimed the 200 freestyle (2:03.19) and the 400 individual medley (4:50.62), Marshall took the 200 butterfly (2:17.09) and the 100 butterfly (1:01.03) and Scalise touched first in the 50 freestyle (25.91) and the 500 freestyle (5:29.61).

Beyond those four, senior Yuka Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) and freshmen Ella Graffin (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) and Krista VerMeersch (Newark, N.Y./Newark) each charted a first-place time individually. Suzuka provided the top 100 backstroke standard (1:02.05), Graffin won the 100 freestyle (57.31) and VerMeersch covered the 200 breaststroke in a first-place 2:42.34.

The Hawks also finished first in both relay events. The 200 medley relay contingent of Suzuka, sophomore Colleen Stewart (Shelton, Conn./Shelton), Marshall and senior Katina Lown (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) clocked an event-winning 1:55.03, while New Paltz's 200 freestyle relay squad of Lown, Graffin, Suzuka and Scalise closed out the meet with a 1:41.67 performance.

Second-place finishes came from junior Niki Ghostlaw (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) in the 1,000 freestyle (11:55.94), freshman Maggie Heaton (New Milford, Conn./New Milford) in the 200 freestyle (2:06.01), Scalise in the 100 backstroke (1:05.68), Stewart in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.55), Graffin in the 200 butterfly (2:26.78), sophomore Kat Buyes (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay) in the 100 freestyle (57.83), freshman Sierra Schools (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) in the 200 backstroke (2:28.46), sophomore Sarah Ferraz (Perth, Australia/Santa Maria College) in the 200 breaststroke (2:46.27), Allocco in the 500 freestyle (5:33.99) and Suzuka in the 100 butterfly (1:04.08).

New Paltz returns to competition from Friday, Nov. 30, through Sunday, Dec. 2, at the 2012 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Winter Championships, which will be held at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, N.Y.
