Devine's 35 Points Not Enough in New Paltz Men's Basketball's 94-78 Loss to Brockport

Box Score

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Junior forward Matt Devine (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold Township) once again carried the State University of New York at New Paltz men's basketball team (8-12, 5-9 SUNYAC) on his shoulders, but the Hawks were unable to stop The College at Brockport's second-half shooting, as the Golden Eagles (9-11, 7-6 SUNYAC) triumphed, 94-78, on Saturday afternoon at Vlogianitis Gymnasium in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action.

Devine scored 35 points off 12-of-19 shooting from the floor and 10-of-13 shooting from the free-throw line, and he also chipped in with seven rebounds and one assist. Beyond Devine, senior guard/forward Harris Wichard (Merrick, N.Y./Bellmore JFK) registered his sixth double-double of the year by scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Wichard further stuffed the stat sheet with four assists and two steals.

For Brockport, Kyheem Green posted a double-double with 25 points—which he achieved off 9-of-15 shooting from the floor and 7-of-7 shooting from the line—and 10 boards. Lance Legister netted 18 points in 19 minutes coming off the bench, while John Ivy and Stephen Sisson scored 14 and 12 points, respectively. Derek Klein kept the offense moving running the point, as he had four assists. Green led the Golden Eagles on defense, corralling two blocks and coming up with three steals.

For the game, the Hawks shot 43.3 percent (26-of-60) from the floor, but they were able to knock down shots at a 53.3 percent (16-of-30) clip in the second half. While New Paltz heated up in the second stanza, so did Brockport, as the Golden Eagles went 15-of-23 (65.2 percent) from the field. Brockport held a 37-32 edge on the glass, and New Paltz turned the ball over 18 times compared to 12 Golden Eagle giveaways. The Hawks had a superb showing at the line once again, knocking down 86.4 percent (19-of-22) of their shots from the charity stripe.

New Paltz hung tough early, holding the lead a number of times throughout the first 10 minutes of the first half. After Devine gave the Hawks a three-point lead with 11:15 left in the half, Brockport went on an 8-0 run, but New Paltz countered with four unanswered points to draw within one. The Golden Eagles continued to build on their lead in the closing minutes of the first stanza, and Kazeem Are gave Brockport its largest lead of the half (14) with 1:24 to go in the period. Wichard knocked down a pair of free throws and freshman guard/forward Matt Pierson (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) hit a trey to pull the Hawks within nine, but Legister cashed in on two free-throw attempts with 18 seconds remaining on the clock to give Brockport a 43-32 halftime lead.

After New Paltz twice cut the deficit to nine in the beginning of the second half, the Golden Eagles went on a 6-0 run to swell the lead to 15. The Hawks began to claw back, and a three-pointer by Devine at 13:09 of the second half capped a quick 6-0 Hawk run, which drew New Paltz within seven. Following a Brockport timeout, the Golden Eagles went on a 7-0 spurt to go ahead by 14, and they would not allow the Hawks to get within single digits the remainder of the tilt.

The Hawks face a tough non-conference test on Tuesday, Feb. 7, as they travel down to Manhattan to square off with No. 19 New York University at 7 p.m.
