CLERMONT, Fla. – The first victory of the 2012 season continues to elude the State University of New York at New Paltz softball team (0-6), as the Hawks lost, 12-3, in six innings to William Paterson University before absorbing a 6-0 loss to Manchester College on Monday at the NTC Spring Games.

In game one against the Pioneers, a seven-run sixth inning by William Paterson ultimately doomed the Hawks, as the game was called due to the eight-run rule with two outs in the frame. During that contest, the Pioneers pounded out 15 hits, eight of which came in the sixth.

New Paltz opened scoring in the second, as senior first baseman Cassie Barcavage (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) and freshman right fielder Marissa Monaco (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) notched back-to-back singles, and senior third baseman Shelby Martin (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) drove them both in with a double in the ensuing at-bat to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead. William Paterson leveled the score in the home half of the inning, though, thanks to a triple by Katelyn Miele. Miele ended up scoring on an error by the catcher.

William Paterson put up three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, and New Paltz scored once more off a Barcavage fielder's choice in the sixth. The Pioneer bats came alive in the bottom of the frame, as they registered three straight hits before the Hawks recorded their first out and ripped back-to-back doubles to end the game after the second out was tallied.

Freshman pitcher Erika Traina (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) drew the start in the circle for New Paltz and sustained the loss, throwing 5 2/3 innings while yielding 12 runs—nine of which were earned—off 15 hits and one walk while striking out three. Kelsey Hand moved to 2-0 for the season after throwing a full six innings. She gave up three runs—two of which were earned—off seven hits with three strikeouts.

New Paltz was led offensively by junior second baseman Melissa Liotta (Brentwood, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and junior center fielder Andrea Feeney (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston), each of whom went 2-for-3. For William Paterson, Miele was a home run short of the cycle, batting 3-for-4 with a double and a triple to go along with two runs scored and two RBI.

The Hawk bats were quieted in the nightcap, as Manchester limited New Paltz to just one hit. The Hawks did draw six walks, though, but they left seven runners on base to Manchester's four. The Spartans scored four runs in the first and two in the sixth to post the shutout win.

Junior pitcher Amber Carozza (Milton, N.Y./Marlboro) took the loss, working a full seven innings in the circle. She gave up six runs—two of which were earned—off eight hits with two strikeouts. Maureen Lund tossed a one-hitter, going seven innings while issuing six walks and striking out seven.

Freshman Meg Brewer (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) had New Paltz's only hit, which she recorded in a pinch-hit appearance in the seventh to break up the no-hitter. Amy Hommema paced the Spartans with a 2-for-4 afternoon with a run scored and an RBI.

New Paltz returns to action on Tuesday, March 20, as it takes on Kalamazoo College at the NTC Spring Games at 9 a.m.
