CLERMONT, Fla. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team (1-6) broke into the win column on Tuesday, beating Kalamazoo College (0-5), 9-4, in a non-conference contest during the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. Junior center fielder
Andrea Feeney (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) led the Hawks offensively with a 3-for-5 performance with three RBI and a stolen base.
New Paltz found balanced offense from its batting order, as 12 different players notched a hit. The Hawk pitching held the Hornets in check, as Kalamazoo had just five hits.
The Hawks wasted no time opening scoring, as senior first baseman
Cassie Barcavage (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) drove in the game's first run in the top of the first. They then pushed across two more in the second courtesy of a two-run single by Feeney.
Kalamazoo answered in the third, scoring three runs off three hits and an error. When two runs came across due to a miscue, the Hornets knotted the score, and junior pitcher
Amber Carozza (Milton, N.Y./Marlboro) entered the game in relief.

Melissa Liotta (Brentwood, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) with a two-out single. New Paltz's largest output in any one inning occurred in the fifth, as sophomore
Chelsea Kull (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) scored two off an RBI single and sophomore
Melissa Kump (Glendale, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) pushed across sophomore
Emily Collazo (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) with a sacrifice fly.
The Hornets scored an unearned run in the sixth, and the Hawks continued to swell their advantage in the top of the seventh, collecting five hits and scoring two runs. New Paltz retired the side in order in the seventh to leave with its first win of the young season.
Junior pitcher
Alyssa Oliva (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) got the start in the circle for New Paltz and did not earn a decision, going 2 2/3 innings and allowing three runs—one of which was earned—off four hits and a walk to go along with six strikeouts. Carozza was credited with the win, working 4 1/3 frames in relief. She permitted just one unearned run off a hit and struck out five.
Taylor Clements shouldered the loss for Kalamazoo, scattering 15 hits and allowing nine runs—eight of which were earned—across seven innings of duty with four strikeouts.
Beyond Feeney, Liotta had a stellar outing offensively, as she went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Five different Hornets accounted for Kalamazoo's final hit total.
New Paltz continues action at the NTC Spring Games tomorrow, as it faces off with the University of Wisconsin-Superior at 11 a.m. followed by a 1 p.m. contest against Bowdoin College.
