NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team (4-2) took down non-conference Hartwick College (3-2) by a 21-8 margin on Saturday afternoon at the Turf Field. The Hawks maintained a balanced attack in the 13-point victory with six New Paltz players scoring three goals apiece.
Sophomore attack player
Talia Tesler (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) led the Hawk scoring effort with six total points, matching her three goals with three assists. Freshman midfielder
Carissa Citro (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) followed close behind with five total points (three goals, two assists). Senior attack player
Samantha DelGaudio (Northport, N.Y./Northport) was credited with four points thanks to her three markers and one helper, while freshman midfielder
Lianne Valdivia (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) and junior attack players
Erin Tornatore (Glen Cove, N.Y./North Shore) and
Juli Rehain (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) each netted three goals.
Hartwick's Hannah Kennedy led all scorers on the day, putting six shots past the keeper for her Hawks. Ali Sisco and Erica Scicchitano accounted for the other two Hartwick goals on the afternoon. Caroline Stanford led her team with three caused turnovers.
New Paltz jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead with a DelGaudio score off a free-position shot in the second minute of action. The scoring picked up for New Paltz with just over 18 minutes remaining in the first half. Goals by Tornatore, Rehain, DelGaudio and Tesler gave New Paltz a 5-0 lead with 14:19 to go in the first period. Hartwick responded with Kennedy's first goal just 17 seconds later, but the New Paltz lead would continue to increase.
Later in the first half, Kennedy's second goal for Hartwick would bring the deficit down to 9-2 with 4:11 to play in the stanza. New Paltz proceeded to go on a 6-0 run to end the first half and continued that momentum through halftime, scoring again 58 seconds into play in the second half to put the home team up 16-2.
Hartwick responded with three consecutive goals to pull within 11, but Hartwick could not get any closer to New Paltz throughout the rest of the contest.
Senior goalkeeper
Stefanie Mignone (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) earned her fourth victory of the year after stopping seven shots and collecting four ground balls. Steph Luce took the loss for Hartwick, but led the game with 11 saves and 11 ground balls.
New Paltz outgained Hartwick in the battle for ground balls, collecting 30 to Hartwick's 27. The home team also won more draw controls, 19-11, and caused more turnovers, 11-10. New Paltz converted on 90 percent of its clear chances (18-of-20), while Hartwick clocked in at around a 70 percent clip (16-of-23). Both teams took seven free-position shots. New Paltz connected on five of those shots while Hartwick only scored on one of the attempts.
New Paltz returns to action on Wednesday, March 28, when the Hawks host non-conference opponent the University of Scranton on the Turf Field at 4 p.m.
