Hawk Women’s Lacrosse Dominant in Season Opening 21-8 Victory over Mount Saint Mary

Box Score Box Score

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team (1-0) started off the 2012 regular season with a bang on Wednesday night, earning a 21-8 victory over non-conference Mount Saint Mary College (0-3) in Newburgh.

The Hawks wasted little time etching new entries into the program's record books, as junior attack player Brianna Horn (Wantagh, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) tied a single-game program-record with six goals on the evening. In addition to this feat, Horn also tied the program record for total points in a single game, as her three assists gave her nine overall points.

Horn joins senior attack player Samantha DelGaudio (Northport, N.Y./Northport) at the top of both lists. DelGaudio had an impressive outing herself on Wednesday, scoring five goals while notching one assist. The Hawks also received spirited performances by junior attack player Erin Tornatore (Glen Cove, N.Y./North Shore) and her three goal night, as well as one-goal, two-assist efforts from both junior attack player Juli Rehain (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) and sophomore attack player Talia Tesler (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton).

For the Knights, Ela Igdeler led the Mount Saint Mary attack with four goals, including two early goals that established both leads the home team would hold. Igdeler also led all players in ground balls collected, corralling five. Ellen Cashin and Kaileen Spadaro each scored two goals for the Knights.

The Hawks actually started the contest in a 3-1 hole, thanks in part to Igdeler's two goals in the first 3:30 of regulation. New Paltz managed to tie the game with 20:49 remaining in the first half after goals by Citro and Horn. The visiting Hawks then turned to one of their offensive captains, DelGaudio, to fire off two more successful scores in the next minute and 47 seconds. A successful free position shot by Citro with 18:23 remaining in the first period gave New Paltz a 6-3 lead before Mount Saint Mary could respond.

The response would come nearly five minutes later, in the form of another Igdeler goal, but the Hawks ended the period on a 4-0 run with two goals each from DelGaudio and Horn. Igdeler scored her fourth and final goal to open scoring in the second half at the 27:30 mark, but it seemed every time the Knights managed to put a point on the board, the Hawks replied with two points of their own. Mount Saint Mary scored its final goal on a Cashin shot with 14:41 left in the game to lower the Hawk margin to 16-8. New Paltz finished the game with five unanswered goals.

Senior goalkeeper Stefanie Mignone (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) earned her first victory of the season, notching nine saves on the night to go along with three ground balls. Lauren Beltrami was charged with the loss for Mount Saint Mary despite saving 11 shots and collecting three ground balls on the evening.

The triumph marks the first notch in the win column for New Paltz head coach Liz Student. Her Hawks were not only able to score 21 points, but also won the caused turnover battle, creating eight changes of possession compared to the Knights' six. Both teams totaled 17 total turnovers. The Hawks won the draw control battle, 19-11.

New Paltz sees its first home action of the 2012 season on Monday, March 12, when the Hawks take on non-conference Ramapo College at 4 p.m. on the Turf Field.
