NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team (10-16, 4-6 SUNYAC), was swept by SUNY Fredonia (14-12-1, 5-7 SUNYAC) in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) twinbill, 9-0 and 4-3, Saturday afternoon at Mary Gray Deane Field.
In game one, Fredonia starter Alyssa Brognano did not give up a hit as she earned the win for the visiting Blue Devils, tossing the complete five inning game. She struck out four batters over her five innings of work, and walked just two.
The Blue Devils stormed out of the gate, posting seven runs in the top of the first, including seven-straight hits to start the game. Fredonia never looked back, as they added two more runs in the fifth to escalate their lead to nine.
Fredonia's Anne Wasik and Kate Bartkowiak each went a perfect 4-for-4 in game one, and Tina Schwartzmeyer picked up three RBI.
The late game kicked off with the Hawks taking the early lead, plating three in their first turn at bat. New Paltz loaded the bases without an out before scoring their first run on senior designated player
Samantha Barra's (Islip, N.Y./Islip) base on balls. Senior first baseman
Cassie Barcavage (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) followed with an RBI single, and junior right fielder
Andrea Feeney (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) brought in another on a bunt single.
Fredonia found the board in the top of the second, scoring a run on Gabrielle Ciccarello's single to right, and adding another on a fielding error at the plate to cut the deficit to one.
The Hawks held the one run lead until the top of the fifth when Fredonia's Wasik singled in Alison Pixley from third to knot things up at three.
The pitching duel continued as the 3-3 tie pushed the game into extra innings. With two outs in the top of the eighth, Fredonia catcher Jessica Lauck broke the tie with a single to right that brought Michelle Lattner around to score the game-winning run.
Junior starter
Amber Carozza (Milton, N.Y./Marlboro) suffered the game two loss for the Hawks. She went the complete eight innings, giving up three earned runs while striking out four.
Freshman center fielder
Shayna Burgess (Smithtown, N.Y./Commack) went 3-for-4 in the nightcap with a run scored, and added a stolen base in the first game. Feeney added two hits of her own and a RBI.
Fredonia's Jennifer Tighe picked up the win in relief, throwing five innings without allowing a run to score.
The Hawks return to action tomorrow afternoon, Sunday, April 15, in a make-up doubleheader at Western Connecticut State University. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
