New Paltz Women’s Lacrosse Unable to Keep Pace with No. 2 Cortland in 22-2 Loss

Box Score Box Score

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team (5-8, 0-4 SUNYAC) was overwhelmed by second-ranked SUNY Cortland (11-1, 4-0 SUNYAC) on Saturday in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game, as the Hawks fell, 22-2. Maria DiFato paced the Red Dragons with seven goals, while Lindsay Abbott had three goals and three assists.

Cortland forged a 15-0 lead in the first half before a goal by freshman midfielder Carissa Citro (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) with 2:35 left in the period broke up the Red Dragons' shutout bid. That marker provided the halftime margin of 15-1. Cortland put three more on the board before freshman midfielder Lianne Valdivia (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) netted a free-position goal with 22:28 to go in regulation to make the tally 18-2 in favor of the home team. The Red Dragons scored four unanswered to close the game, though, and they pushed their winning streak to nine games.

Cortland dominated the stat sheet, outshooting the Hawks, 45-10, and scooping up 30 ground balls to New Paltz's 11. The Red Dragons were 12-for-12 on clear attempts, while the Hawks were just 1-for-15. New Paltz's silver lining, though, came off the draw, as the Blue and Orange was only outdrawn by a 14-12 margin.

Citro and Valdivia were the lone Hawks to score goals, while Citro led both teams in draw controls with four.

For Cortland, beyond DiFato and Abbott, Erin Kollar netted three markers, while Taylor Reh provided two. In addition, Gina Campese, Laura Edward, Marilyn Farrell, Taylor Robinson, Mary Hartzheim, Emmalyn Osterling and Liz Beville all scored once. Di Fato also posted game-highs in ground balls (6) and caused turnovers (7).

Senior goalkeeper Stefanie Mignone (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) was charged with the loss in goal, making 14 saves in 38:06 of action before handing the reins to freshman goalkeeper Jackie Ulanoff (Northport, N.Y./Northport). Ulanoff turned aside two shots in 21:54 of play. For the Red Dragons, Shauna Hutchinson corralled the win, making seven saves in 48:23 of playing time. Courtney Morgan held the Hawks scoreless and made two stops in the final 11:37 of action.

New Paltz looks to return to the win column on Tuesday, April 17, as it hosts SUNY Oswego at 4 p.m. at the Turf Field in a SUNYAC contest.
