Box Score 2 GENESEO, N.Y. – After being shut out, 5-0, in game one of a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader on Friday afternoon against SUNY Geneseo (13-17, 6-6 SUNYAC), the State University of New York at New Paltz softball team (13-19, 5-7 SUNYAC) rebounded with a 5-3 victory in nine innings in the nightcap. Junior left fielder
Andrea Feeney (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) paced the Hawks in game two with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate that included three runs scored, an RBI and a triple.
Game one saw early scoring from the Blue Knights, and the home team kept New Paltz in check the rest of the way to come away with the win.
Samantha Trapasso plated KK Schaus with an RBI single in the first, while Geneseo received four RBI off three singles in the second to mount a 5-0 advantage. Both pitchers hunkered down in the late innings, and neither team was able to push another run across.
Freshman pitcher
Erika Traina (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) was New Paltz's pitcher of record in game one, as she gave up five runs—one of which was earned—off fits hits and a walk while striking out one over two innings of duty in the loss. Junior pitcher
Amber Carozza (Milton, N.Y./Marlboro) pitched admirably in relief, scattering just three hits in four scoreless innings. Geneseo's Mary Bostwick was the game-one winner, tossing a complete-game shutout.
Five different Hawks accounted for the team's hit total, while Schaus led the Blue Knights with a 3-for-3 outing, which included a run scored and an RBI.
Game two saw a number of ups and downs for both teams, and a pair of Hawk runs in the ninth wound up being the difference.
Geneseo scored off an error in the second inning to open scoring, and Feeney was plated off an error by the left fielder in the top half of the third to tie the game. The Blue Knights got back on top with a Trapasso RBI double in the home half of the inning, but the Hawks took their first lead of the afternoon in the fourth. Feeney tripled to bring in freshman center fielder
Shayna Burgess (Smithtown, N.Y./Commack), and junior second baseman
Melissa Liotta (Brentwood, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) singled to drive in Feeney to make it a 3-2 ballgame.
Molly Walsh tied it up for the home team in the sixth, plating Ashley Fillmore off an RBI base knock. After neither side was able to push past even over the course of the sixth and seventh innings, the game went into extra frames.
In the ninth, Liotta broke the 3-all tie with an RBI single, and senior designated player
Samantha Barra (Islip, N.Y./Islip) followed suit with an RBI single of her own to give New Paltz a 5-3 lead. The Hawks retired the Blue Knights in order in the ninth to claim the win.
Carozza went the distance for New Paltz in the circle, permitting three runs—two of which were earned—off nine hits and a walk while striking out one over nine innings of work. Katie Gallagher received the start for Geneseo and did not earn a decision, as she went 3 2/3 frames while giving up three unearned runs. Bostwick was unable to match her decision from game one, as she was handed the loss after yielding two runs off six hits over 5 1/3 innings of duty in relief.
Beyond Feeney, Liotta (2-for-5, two RBI) and Barra (2-for-4, RBI) each had multiple-hit performances. Elise Porreca led Geneseo by going 3-for-3 with a run scored, while Kelsey Ogden and Trapasso each had more than one hit as well.
New Paltz continues its push toward qualifying for the 2012 SUNYAC Softball Tournament tomorrow afternoon, as it squares off with The College at Brockport in a noon league doubleheader in Brockport, N.Y.
