BROCKPORT, N.Y. – With a game-high 10 draw controls against The College at Brockport on Saturday afternoon in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action, junior attack player
Erin Tornatore (Glen Cove, N.Y./North Shore) of the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team reset the single-season program record in the statistical category. New Paltz (4-6, 0-2 SUNYAC), however, found itself in a 14-2 hole at halftime and wound up losing, 20-8, to the Golden Eagles (6-2, 2-1 SUNYAC).
Tornatore now has 55 draw controls for the year, which betters the program's former single-season mark of 47 that she set last season.
New Paltz looked strong early on, as after Brockport's Kaila Maguire opened scoring, Tornatore and senior midfielder
Julia Donato (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) scored back-to-back unassisted goals to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead. That edge would hold for nearly three minutes, but the floodgates opened with Brockport's next goal, as the Golden Eagles scored 13 unanswered markers to close the half.
Karen Bianchi made it 14 unanswered scores with a short-handed goal just 2:29 into the second half, but freshman midfielder
Carissa Citro (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) broke the scoring spree after taking a pass from junior defender
Regina Bates (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) into the back of the net. Donato scored her second goal of the game off a feed from senior attack player
Samantha DelGaudio (Northport, N.Y./Northport) a few minutes later to trim the deficit to 11, but the Golden Eagles buried three straight to swell the cushion even more. In the final six minutes of the contest, New Paltz outscored Brockport, 4-2, as it received markers from freshman midfielder
Lianne Valdivia (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston), sophomore attack player
Talia Tesler (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton), freshman midfielder
Fatima Ismail (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) and Tornatore.
The Golden Eagles overwhelmed the Hawks in nearly every statistical category. Brockport outshot New Paltz, 50-20, and the home team went 17-for-22 on clear attempts compared to the Hawks' 9-for-14 showing. New Paltz did, however, win 16 draw controls to Brockport's 14.
Donato and Tornatore paced the Hawk offense with two goals each, while Citro, Tesler, Valdivia and Ismail all scored once. DelGaudio finished with two assists, while Bates dished out one helper.
For Brockport, Dayna Piraino, Alyssa Scordo and Emily Zartman all netted three goals, while Maguire, Nina Tassone and Alyssa Case each scored twice. Bianchi, Sarah Brown, Katie Sullivan, Erin Featherstone and Lauren Hartman rounded out the remainder of the Golden Eagle scorers. Piraino and Brown kept the offense running with three assists apiece, and Bianchi created problems for the Hawks on defense, as she caused eight turnovers.
Senior goalkeeper
Stefanie Mignone (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) stopped 16 shots in 49:45 of action in net for the Hawks, absorbing the loss, while Brockport's Bree Galloway earned the win in a nine-save effort.
New Paltz looks to get back in the win column on Tuesday, April 10, as it takes on SUNY Oneonta at 4 p.m. in a SUNYAC contest at the Turf Field.
