Hawk Women’s Volleyball Goes 1-1 on First Day of Season-Opening NYU Labor Day Invite

NEW YORK – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team (1-1) topped host New York University (0-2), 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-10), before succumbing to Salisbury University (2-0), 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 27-25), on the first day of the NYU Labor Day Invite on Friday afternoon at the Coles Sports Center. It marked the 2012 season opener for all of the teams involved in the tournament.

Against the Violets in the first match of the afternoon, freshman outside hitter Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) shined in her college volleyball debut, hitting .391 with 11 kills to pace the Hawk attack. Junior setter Marissa King (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) and junior libero Carrie Hack (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) led the defense with 13 digs apiece, while King and sophomore libero Katy Herbst (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) each floored three service aces. Senior middle hitter Dana Vosilla (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) shored up the front row defensively with one block solo and three block assists, while King doled out 25 assists. As a team, the Hawks hit .314 in the first set before hitting .310 in the second stanza and .333 in the third frame.

The Seagulls relied on 84 digs to keep rallies alive in a straight-set win over the Hawks in the nightcap. Senior outside hitter Michelle Jacobson (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) hit .406 (14-1-32) to lead the New Paltz offense, while Hack had a 25-dig performance to key the back row. Vosilla came up with four block solos and one block assist, while King handed out 25 assists. Carley Todd had a triple-double for Salisbury with 11 kills, 27 assists and 22 digs.

New Paltz continues action tomorrow at the NYU Labor Day Invite, squaring off with the University of Wisconsin-Platteville at 10 a.m. before contesting the Stevens Institute of Technology at 2 p.m.
