NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – A goal in each half propelled the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (1-0) to a 2-0, non-conference victory over Western Connecticut State University (0-1) on Saturday afternoon at the Turf Field. Junior midfielder/forward
Danielle Conklin (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) and junior defender
Alyssa Stock (Morris Plains, N.J./Whippany Park) each scored for the Hawks in the winning effort.
Just 7:38 into the game, Conklin recorded a goal off a pass from freshman forward
Dani Ackerman (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East), who was to the right of the cage. The Hawks controlled the ball for most of the first half, as New Paltz took a 1-0 lead and a 7-1 shot margin into the halftime intermission.
Western Connecticut had a few scoring opportunities in the first five minutes of the second stanza, as it took five penalty corners and got off three shots, one of which was on goal, during that span. That would be the Colonials' best stretch of the half, as New Paltz tacked on an insurance score at 59:02. Stock ripped a shot from the upper left-hand side of the arc and rattled the back of the cage, scoring unassisted.
The Hawks held a 16-5 edge in shots and also took 12 penalty corners to the Colonials' seven. All seven of Western Connecticut's attempted penalty corners came in the second half.
Junior goalkeeper
Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) collected the win and the shutout, going a full 70 minutes in net and turning aside two shots. Kaeley DeNegre was saddled with the loss for Western Connecticut, giving up two goals and making seven saves.
New Paltz returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 5, as it begins a three-game road swing with a 7 p.m. non-conference game against William Paterson University in Wayne, N.J.
