Women’s Soccer Takes Michelle Vargas-Robin Memorial Tournament Title with 5-0 Win over New Jersey City

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Senior forward Shelby Kondelka (Bloomingsburg, N.Y./Pine Bush) notched a pair of goals as the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team (2-0-0) shut out New Jersey City University (0-1-1), 5-0, in Saturday afternoon's Michelle Vargas-Robin Memorial Tournament finale, clinching the tournament championship.

Kondelka made the most of her 17 minutes on the field, firing off five shots, two of which found the back of the net. This ties her for the team lead two games into the season, after senior midfielder Beth Bowling (Islip, N.Y./Islip) tacked on her second score of the season in the 63rd minute of the contest.

Senior forward Samantha Abravanel (Islip, N.Y./Islip) kicked off the scoring for the Hawks in the 10th minute off a feed from freshman forward Chelsea Weir (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip). She returned the favor less than 10 minutes later, assisting Weir's first career goal.

Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y./Baldwin Senior) is yet to allow a goal this season, shutting out both opponents over the weekend. Saturday's clean slate pulls her within one of the program record. Vega stopped all three shots she faced in the game.

Sophomore midfielder Eleni Anselmi (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) and freshman midfielder Marissa Carlton (Port Jervis, N.Y./Port Jervis) each picked up an assist in Saturday's matchup.

The Hawks significantly outshot the Gothic Knights, 27-4, including a 17-3 deficit in shots on goal.

New Paltz returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 5, when they travel to Union (N.Y.) College. The matchup is set to kickoff at 4 p.m.
