New Paltz Women’s Volleyball Falls to Clarkson, Beats Oswego on Day 2 of Hawks Invitational

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – After falling, 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-12), to Clarkson University in the 10 a.m. match on day two at the Hawks Invitational on Saturday, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team (11-2) regrouped, downing SUNY Oswego, 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-22), in the nightcap. Clarkson wound up winning the tournament for the second year in a row, going 4-0 for the weekend without losing a set. Senior outside hitter Michelle Jacobson (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) was named to the All-Tournament Team.

New Paltz ended up going 3-1 at its tournament, finishing in a tie with Mount Saint Mary College for second. Oswego and Johnson & Wales University each went 2-2, while Ithaca College and The College at Old Westbury each were 1-3. Alfred University went 0-4.

Against Clarkson, Jacobson led the way with 10 kills and 10 digs, while freshman outside hitter Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) and junior libero Carrie Hack (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) paced the defense with 20 and 16 digs, respectively. Junior setter Marissa King (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) handed out 26 assists, while junior middle hitter Liz Hauser (East Williston, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) hit .471 (8-0-17). For the Golden Knights, Victoria Kirkemo and Aishvina Arasu boasted 13 and 12 kills, respectively, while Kirstie Shurie had 25 digs, including 11 in the first set.

Senior right side Eleanor Skovgaard (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford-Sutherland) was the top performer against Oswego, flooring 12 kills and assembling a .556 hitting percentage. Jacobson and sophomore libero Katy Herbst (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) collected 14 and 10 digs, respectively, while King doled out 23 assists. The Lakers used 15 players against the Hawks, receiving balanced contributions throughout.

New Paltz opens up State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) East Division play from Friday, Sept. 21, through Saturday, Sept. 22, at SUNY Cortland. Cortland and New Paltz each will serve as an East Division Pool Play site in 2012.
