New Paltz Field Hockey Surrenders Two Second-Half Goals in 2-0 Loss to Cortland

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (4-3, 1-1 SUNYAC) suffered a 2-0 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) loss to SUNY Cortland (2-3, 1-1 SUNYAC) on Saturday afternoon at the Turf Field. Erin Smith accounted for both of the Red Dragons' markers.

New Paltz hung tough with Cortland throughout the game, and the Red Dragons held just a 10-5 margin in shots at the end of the first half.

After a scoreless first period, Cortland got on the board in the opening minutes of the second stanza, with Smith scoring her first goal at 37:55. Smith broke through the offensive third and into the circle, and dribbling on her own, she beat the goalkeeper to her right to give the Red Dragons a 1-0 edge.

In the 57th minute, following a penalty corner, Smith earned a penalty-stroke opportunity and cashed in, tucking a shot inside the lower left-hand corner of the cage.

The Hawks had a chance to cut the lead in half with time expired, as they earned three penalty corners with the clock at zero. During that time, the team ripped off four shots, the last of which went wide left and ended the game.

For the contest, Cortland outshot New Paltz, 18-12, and the Red Dragons took 12 penalty corners to the Hawks' 10.

Amanda Perricone earned the win in goal for Cortland, making three stops, while junior goalkeeper Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) shouldered the loss for New Paltz with eight saves to her ledger.

New Paltz returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 26, when it visits Union (N.Y.) College for a 4 p.m. non-conference game.
