NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – After leveling the tally at 1-all midway through the second half, the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (6-4) allowed a goal with less than five minutes remaining in the contest, dropping a 2-1 decision to No. 20 Rowan University (8-3) on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at the Turf Field.
Rowan dictated the tempo throughout much of the first half, forcing junior goalkeeper
Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) to make nine stops in the first 35 minutes of play. Kellie Campbell finally reaped the fruits of Rowan's strong offensive pressure at 32:55, cashing in on a pass from Karlee Henderson.
After the first half, the Profs held a 15-6 margin in shots and a 7-3 edge in penalty corners.
New Paltz made a run to tie the game early in the second period, and it kept on building momentum until freshman midfielder/defender
Jessica Caruana (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) evened the score at 1-1 in the 55th minute. Junior midfielder/forward
Danielle Conklin (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) inserted the ball on a penalty corner, and Caruana, who was situated at the top of the circle, ripped a shot that rattled the back of the cage.
Rowan called a timeout a few minutes later, and from that point forward, it did not allow the Hawks to put another shot on goal. At 65:51, the Profs' Amy McKeever scored amongst traffic in the circle, and that would prove to be the game-winner.
Pjetri made 11 saves total in the loss, while her counterpart, Jen Goldberg, turned aside nine shots.
For the contest, Rowan held a 21-17 cushion in shots, but New Paltz took 12 penalty corners to the Profs' 10.
New Paltz returns to action on Friday, Oct. 5, when it takes on State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) foe SUNY Geneseo at 4 p.m. in Geneseo, N.Y.
