NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Senior
Yuka Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) of the State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team set an Elting Pool record and achieved an NCAA “B” qualifying standard in the Hawks' (7-0) 130-75 victory over SUNY Oneonta (1-3) on Saturday afternoon. It marked the 2012-13 home finale for New Paltz, and it served as the team's final dual meet of the year.
Suzuka powered her way to a time of 57.66 in the 100 backstroke, which bettered the former facility standard of 59.45 set by Michelle Coombs of New Paltz in 2008. It also met the NCAA “B” mark, which she had already achieved earlier this season at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Winter Championships. Suzuka won the 200 individual medley (2:14.73) as well, and she swam the backstroke leg on the Hawks' first-place 200 medley relay team that charted a 1:54.75. Seniors
Anna Jakubek (Harriman, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury),
Carly Marshall (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall Central) and
Katina Lown (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) filled out the rest of the relay contingent.
A second pool record was set later on in the meet, as the 200 freestyle relay foursome of Lown, freshmen
Ella Graffin (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) and
Cassidy Griger (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown Central) and junior
Victoria Scalise (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) covered the race in a first-place 1:40.25. That improved upon the former facility mark of 1:40.64, which New Paltz's relay team of Lown, Scalise, Jakubek and
Christine Rieth set in 2012.
Allocco and Scalise each won two individual events along with Suzuka. Allocco captured first in the 1,000 freestyle (10:51.81) and the 500 freestyle (5:22.74), while Scalise won the 50 freestyle (25.90) and the 100 freestyle (55.20). Griger also won an individual event, as she paced the field in the 200 freestyle (1:58.69).
Second-place performances came from Marshall in the 100 butterfly (1:02.07), Griger in the 100 freestyle (55.52) and sophomore
Colleen Stewart (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.95).
New Paltz has its final tune-up before the 2013 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Swimming & Diving Championships on Saturday, Feb. 2, as it competes at the Skidmore Sprint Invitational at 1 p.m.
