NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team is now the lone team remaining in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) with an unblemished conference record, as the Hawks won twice during the final day of the second round of SUNYAC Pool Play on Saturday at the Hawk Center. New Paltz won, 3-1 (25-22, 25-14, 21-25, 26-24), against Buffalo State before downing SUNY Oneonta, 3-0 (25-20, 25-8, 25-16), in the nightcap.
New Paltz stretched its winning streak to eight with the pair of wins, and it now stands one match ahead of Buffalo State in the SUNYAC standings with three conference contests to play. The Hawks also hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Bengals.
Senior setter
Marissa King (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) dished out 80 assists across the two matches and pushed her career total to 4,058. She is the second New Paltz student-athlete to achieve that milestone, and only seven other student-athletes in the history of the SUNYAC have achieved that feat.
The Hawks move to 20-5 overall and 6-0 in SUNYAC competition for the year. They return to action from Friday-Saturday, Oct. 18-19, at the Hartwick College Holiday Inn Invitational, with their first match of the tournament being on Friday at 6 p.m. against host Hartwick. Buffalo State, which also defeated The College at Brockport Saturday, advances to 17-7 overall (5-1 SUNYAC). The Bengals next host Nazareth College on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. Oneonta, which notched a win over Brockport as well Saturday, moves to 10-13 overall (10-13 SUNYAC). The Red Dragons' next competition is the Hartwick College Invitational as well, and they will have a rematch against New Paltz on Saturday.
In the Buffalo State match, New Paltz appeared headed for a straight-set sweep but ended up surviving the Bengals in the fourth set to claim the 3-1 win. Buffalo State outhit New Paltz .154-to-.148, and the Bengals held a 7-5 advantage in blocks. The Hawks, however, created more offensive opportunities, taking 182 swings to the Bengals' 136, and they spread the wealth on the attack, as four different players reached double-digit figures in kills.
Buffalo State led early in the first set, hopping out to a 3-0 advantage. New Paltz received three straight kills from sophomore outside hitter
Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) to tie the score, but the Bengals scored on the next rally to reclaim the lead. New Paltz then went on a 5-0 run, which included two Borquist service aces, and it held the lead up until Buffalo State tied the score at 20-all with a Sarah Horvath kill. The two teams traded points until a Borquist kill and two Bengal attacking errors gave the Hawks the set at 25-22.
New Paltz dominated play in the second stanza, jumping to a 10-0 lead before Buffalo State scored its first point. The Bengals scored consecutive points just twice in the set, and the Hawks hit at a .243 clip to run away with a 25-14 triumph.
The Hawks were unable to create separation in the third stanza, and Jessica Crooks gave Buffalo State its first lead of the set at 15-14 with a kill. Junior outside hitter
Katy Herbst (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) factored into the next two points with a kill and a service ace to put New Paltz back on top, but back-to-back kills from Hannah Renaldo gave Buffalo State a 17-16 edge. The Bengals never trailed in the frame from that point forward, and they wound up winning by a 25-21 final.
The two teams battled once again in the fourth, as a comfortable 18-14 New Paltz lead transformed into a 22-21 Buffalo State edge after a Hawk attacking error. A service miscue gave the Hawks the ball back, but Kelsey Bashore slammed down a termination on the next rally to reclaim the Bengal lead. Freshman middle hitter
Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) and senior middle hitter
Liz Hauser (East Williston, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) had back-to-back kills to force a Buffalo State timeout, and a New Paltz attacking error helped Buffalo State stave off match point. Hauser and Borquist scored the Hawks' next two points, and New Paltz wound up taking the fourth, 26-24.
Borquist led the Hawks on offense with 16 kills, while Hauser, Herbst and junior outside hitter
Alex Bizub (Linden, N.J./Cranford) boasted 14, 11 and 10 kills, respectively. King dished out 49 assists and added five service aces, while Hauser led the team in blocks with three. Herbst, King and Borquist each finished with a double-double, as they collected 19, 12 and 10 digs, respectively. Senior libero
Carrie Hack (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) continued to keep the team afloat defensively with 23 digs.
For Buffalo State, Kayla Pyc was the lone player with double-digit kill figures, as she landed 10 en route to fashioning a .350 hitting percentage. Bashore chipped in with 31 assists and 21 digs, while Crooks and Parente corralled four block assists. Chelsea Moore came up with a team-high 23 digs.
New Paltz cruised to a straight-set win over Oneonta, posting a .172 hitting percentage and limiting the Red Dragons to hitting a .000 clip. Both teams had three total blocks, but the Hawks managed 11 service aces to the Red Dragons' two. The match, which lasted approximately 1:10, saw just one lead change.
Oneonta scored the first point of the match off a Jill Darpino kill, and it would be the final time that the Red Dragons would hold the upper hand on the scoreboard. New Paltz appeared to be headed to an easy win in the first after constructing a 19-9 advantage, but Oneonta went on a 7-0 run to pull within three at 19-16. The Red Dragons were unable to score consecutive points from that point forward in the first, and the Hawks prevailed, 25-20.
Both programs played close in the second set until New Paltz scored 11 straight points to capture an 18-5 lead. The Red Dragons scored just three points the rest of the stanza, and the Hawks took the second, 25-8.
Oneonta hung around in the third set and drew within four points at 19-15 after a Hawk attacking error. New Paltz, however, scored six of the match's final seven points and completed the sweep with a 25-16 victory in the third stanza.
Borquist ignited the Hawks' attack with 15 kills and a .289 hitting percentage. King doled out 31 assists and nearly boasted a triple-double with nine service aces and eight digs. Borquist was the lone New Paltz student-athlete with a double-double, as she added 12 digs to her 15-kill performance. Herbst and Hack paced the back row defensively with 17 and 16 digs, respectively.
For Oneonta, two pairs of sisters held the team-high totals in kills and digs. Jill and Erica Darpino paced the offense with five kills each, while Jessica and Kristina Pelaccio led the defense with 10 digs each.
