RANDALLS ISLAND, NY – In a game that saw the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team reel off 34 shots and allow only two, the Hawks got back on the winning track with a 1-0 victory over Hunter College on Tuesday evening in a non-conference game played on Randall's Island.
The 34 shots yielded only one goal, a tally by junior midfielder
Alec Johnson (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa, NY) at the 35:55 mark of the first half, but it was enough for the Hawks to resume State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUYNAC) play on Saturday against conference leading SUNY Oneonta with momentum.
New Paltz improves to 4-9-2 on the season. Hunter drops to 2-13. The Hawks visit Oneonta (9-2-3, 5-0-1, SUNYAC) on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m game. The Hawks return to Randalls Island on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. tilt against John Jay.
Johnson's tally, one of the six shots he booted during the contest, was assisted by freshman midfielder
Sam Wasser (Melville, NY/Half Hallow Hills), who had nine shots in the contest. It came off an an initial blocked shot in the box.
New Paltz had 17 shots in both the first and second half. Senior midfielder
Bernardo Menendez (Buenos Aires, Argentina/San Martin de Tours) had six shots. Hunter goalie Emmanuel Aprilakis made seven saves in the save. Hawks junior goalie
Steven Domino (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) earned the victory, his fourth of the season.
The Hawks won the battle of corner kicks with an 8-1 advantage.
