NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team (16-5) overcame a loss in the second set on Wednesday evening at the Hawk Center and ultimately won by a 3-1 (25-8, 17-25, 25-18, 25-17) final against non-conference Baruch College (9-9).
After hitting .500 (10-1-18) in the first set, New Paltz cooled off in the second stanza, hitting just -.036 off 12 kills and 14 errors in 55 total attempts. The third frame saw the Hawks get back on track with a .364 mark, and Baruch's .028 clip in the fourth set helped New Paltz claim the win.
The biggest difference between the two teams in the match came off the serve. New Paltz finished with 16 service aces compared to just two receiving errors.
Sophomore outside hitter
Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) was the lynchpin of the Hawk attack, fashioning a .310 hitting percentage (13-4-29). Borquist nearly achieved a triple-double, as she finished with eight service aces and seven digs. Senior setter
Marissa King (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) dished out 38 assists, while junior outside hitter
Katy Herbst (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) corralled 23 digs.
For Baruch, Rebecca Peralta ignited the attack with 13 kills. Crystle Dela Cruz was the lone player from either team to notch a double-double, as she collected 26 assists and 11 digs. Nicole Lockwood produced the Bearcats' team-high in digs with 18, while McKenzie Davidson finished with nine kills and 13 digs.
New Paltz is idle this weekend and next returns to action at the Hawk Center on Wednesday, Oct. 9, for a 7:30 p.m. non-conference match against nationally-ranked Williams College.
