Women's Volleyball Faces Cross-River Rival Vassar on Wednesday

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team looks to build on its 15-match win streak on Wednesday, Oct. 30, as the Hawks visit cross-river rival Vassar College for a 7 p.m. non-conference match.

Records: New Paltz sits at 27-5 overall and owns a 9-0 record in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC). Vassar is 18-14 overall and possesses a 7-5 mark in the Liberty League.

Scouting the Hawks: New Paltz finished its unbeaten run through the SUNYAC from Friday-Saturday, Oct. 25-26, during the third round of SUNYAC Pool Play at Buffalo State… New Paltz downed SUNY Oswego on Friday before topping SUNY Cortland and SUNY Potsdam on Saturday… By virtue of finishing the conference schedule undefeated, the Hawks earned the top seed in the 2013 SUNYAC Volleyball Championship Tournament, which New Paltz will host at the Hawk Center from Friday-Sunday, Nov. 8-10… The Hawks have won 15 straight matches, which is the second-longest string of victories in program history… The school record for consecutive wins is 23, which the program achieved in 2009… Senior setter Marissa King leads the SUNYAC in assists per set (9.96), while sophomore outside hitter Becca Borquist and senior libero Carrie Hack rank second in the conference in kills per set (3.51) and digs per set (4.78), respectively.

Scouting the Brewers: Vassar had a three-match win streak snapped on Saturday, losing to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 3-2 (17-25, 29-27, 25-11, 15-25, 16-14)… Prior to their loss against Coast Guard, the Brewers downed Connecticut College in straight sets… Junior Taylor Mosley ranks second in the Liberty League in kills per set (3.36), while senior Rose Carman leads the league in assists per set (9.58).

Last Meeting: (Box Score): New Paltz kept its at-large hopes alive when the two teams last met on Oct. 24, 2012, as the Hawks prevailed, 3-2 (25-23, 24-26, 30-28, 15-25, 15-6), at the Hawk Center… During that match, then junior setter Marissa King broke the single-season program record for assists… Then senior Michelle Jacobson keyed the Hawks both on offense and on defense, hitting .306 (17-2-49) and corralling 21 digs… Then freshman Becca Borquist chipped in with 14 kills and 24 digs, while then senior Dana Vosilla pounded down 12 kills… Then junior Carrie Hack also covered the court defensively with 23 digs… Then junior Jessie Ditmore paced the Brewer attack with 18 kills, while then freshman Taylor Mosley and then senior Chloe McGuire contributed 15 and 13 kills, respectively.

Head Coaches: New Paltz is led by 12th-year head coach Matt Giufre, who has guided the Hawks to three NCAA Tournament appearances and one SUNYAC title. Henry Chuang is in his first year as an interim head coach at Vassar.

What's Next: New Paltz concludes its regular season at the Skidmore Invitational from Friday-Saturday, Nov. 1-2. The Hawks face Union (N.Y.) College at 4 p.m. on Friday before squaring off with Kean University and Skidmore College at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively, on Saturday. Vassar hosts a tri-match on Saturday against the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (1 p.m.) and the University of Massachusetts-Boston (3 p.m.), which serves as its final contests of the regular season.
